Her mother doesnt sew and my son isnt home much during the day...maybe this summer on school break would be a good time to teach her.
She wants to make a quilt of her own! Im ALL FOR teaching them crafts and sewing and anything else they show an interest in just to see if they like it, even the boys. My 8 year old grandson loves to operate the footfeed when Im sewing. :) His dad (my son) loves to sew and to latch rugs and needlepoint...and I encourage it!

This is her first quilt. Started at 5 y/o...finished at 6 y/o....lots of patience and practice. I found that using a pencil to draw her stitching lines was tremendous help. Also heavily pinned. I think I would use school glue now, mostly to ease my nerves over pin pricks, but wasn't really that bad! Minimal quilting and I finished the edges for her. It is a well loved, heavily used quilt. She is actually to big for it except as a lap....

In between doing all my blocks for this Boom, I am also doing the blocks for my quilt class. this semester we are doing a Nautical quilt design by our instructor Lyn Brown. I chose to do mine in aqua, teal, turquois and I am pleased as how it is turning out. It will eventually become a tumbler/thimble quilt. here is a picture. Anyone can get the patterns at lynbrown.com.

Alikat, what a lovely quilt...she did an amazing job. Joanlizbay, when we started teaching sewing in 4H, used super simple coloring book pages. Have her sew the lines (no thread in needle or bobbin). She will get the hang of straight and curved lines in no time.

and, I rec'd wonderful block from Missgigglewings today. Thank you, thank you.

Exciting news! I am finished with all except one block.....

OkDarla, Elisabrat, quiltingmommy, Abby's Mom, Tracibug, lovingrandma, Goldendog55, and Phannie- I will be mailing your blocks home by end of week. Pictures are in my album...see link below.

This leaves yours moonwork...I am mostly finished with yours and as I said last week, it has cats. But, before I finish it, please look at it nearly completed in my album. I used a little white in it cause I could not imagine completing this special block for your dad any other way. Also, if he hasn't yet figured out that this quilt might be for him, my block to him will be a dead give away. If you don't think it is right,II still have plenty left to do an alternative!

Ali!
I'm sure he'll love it as much as I do...I honestly don't think it will be a give a way to him because he'll be thrilled with the puzzle and kitties. We tell him the cats are his "babies" so he'll think it refers to that I bet.

It's so cooooool...thanks :)

I received beautiful blocks from Missgigglewings and Phannie this week, and they are just so lovely, thank you! All my grownups have been mailed (last 2 went out today) and there are 11 to come home. The decision to be made now is to make 1 big quilt or 2 lap quilts.... I'm leaning towards 1

I've had eye surgery and won't be able to get new glasses for about 6 weeks. Anyway, I'm almost blind for close-up work. I'll get the blocks made, but if your block doesn't look right, I'll fix it for you after the 6 weeks are up. Even my paper-piecing won't be up to snuff! I see 2 lines, and can't figure out which is my sewing line!

Hope all went well with the surgery. I think we will all understand if blocks are a little off. Sounds like most of us has had issues this swap. Thanks for sticking it out for us. Phannie

This quilt will be donated to West victims when finished!

Got a beautiful patriots block from Missgigglewings. Thank you very much. It fits in perfectly. You even sent back the extra fabric. thanks

Elisabrat 04-28-2013 04:26 AM

That is such a wonderful thing your doing donating your quilt and I can say boy there are several blocks in there that I would love to steal from you!!! the colors are magnificient and it is coming out beautiful. Bravo!!!

I am thinking only a few more blocks wandering back in this direction? hope hope hope!

Goldendog55, if you have blocks to finish let them rest your people will understand. I think most of us get life happens. I worry all the time oh please dont makeme go back to the hospital I have THINGS to turn in!!! lol..seriously it is right there on the top of my mind oh no if I am out of commission I am BEHIND! but I have no control.. a lot of us have no control when this stuff comes in and I am positive no one would pick it. We would all want to be healthy, in good working order and never need things fixed. Thats where the old life happens comes in. Be patient with those who need a bit of extra time or compassion. Its a free gift you give yourself and everyone around you :)

joanelizbay 04-28-2013 05:27 AM

Alisha I have a box to be mailed to you tomorrow. I love the quilt you just finished to give to charity! You are really a compassionate person and Im sure it will be greatly appreciated!

travelinggramma 04-28-2013 10:11 AM

May all you who are recouperating - take a breather - take this down time to look through your pile of magazines and organize your stash. Yes, in a perfect world we would all be done in another month, but we aren't in a perfect world. We all can wait until you heal and have the ability and time to complete the task. Keep us updated on your health and what you are doing so we can pray and support you.

joanelizbay 04-28-2013 01:07 PM

Wow...my nephew called and told me to meet him 1/2 way between home and St louis, he had something for me.
I was shocked when he loaded up 8 trashbags of fabric, yarn, thread, knitting needles, etc AND my sisters Bernina sewing machine!! Wow...it feels like Christmas! Hope I can find instructions to operate it! LOL

LovingIzabella 04-29-2013 05:30 AM

Hello All
Sorry I have been MIA. Since having my two surgeries I ended up having some pretty severe muscle spasms once I returned to work. Well lo and behold it was due to the muscles they had to cut almost back to back. The doctor told me I have to limit my computer/tv/reading/electronic usage as much as possible to reduce the strain and let the muscles calm down and heal :)
I have received a lot of beautiful blocks and I will try to get pictures of them all posted soon :) Thank you all so very much. I will have all blocks done and home on time I promise :)

Also I just wanted to post a gentle reminder to be careful of the starches or washes you may use. We do have some members who are highly allergic to fragrance.

Thank you all again-you are the bestest!
Hugs
April

Elisabrat 04-29-2013 06:50 AM

April, heal now able to do more later.. good trade. take whatever it takes to get those muscles back in working order. I am so sorry your life is putting you to the test over and over again. I am however happy to hear your handling it with stride and grace and taking it one foot foward always. your little Izabella has a wonderful role model knowing she faces struggles of her own also.. seeing you take it on will help her be strong too. xox

I wonder how many blocks are outstanding.. anyone know if the still have mine to work on? guess i can go count them lol .. I always figure it is what it is. I am so thrilled with what you have all made for me and am already planning a game day win for the next boom. I love the boom's!!

ArizonaKAT 04-29-2013 10:37 AM

I received grownups last week from Moonwork (the yellow was just what I needed)
and missgigglewings (pretty electric blue).

Thanks, ladies.

and here's a thanks to those of you who sent and I didn't mention. It wasn't on purpose. I kinda lost my way there for a couple of weeks. I'll take a pic of my blocks tonight and upload tomorrow.

I have 24 adults at home so I'm waiting for quite a few. No one wants to come to AZ in the heat . . . not even the blocks.

It's been a while too since I've received any blocks ... I believe there's still 11 left to come home in the next month. Dad tells me everyday there's no blocks :(.

joanelizbay 04-29-2013 02:06 PM

This is the worst part of the swap..nothing but junk in my mail box! I get so excited when we lst start and I get tons of envelopes to open and look at...then a little later when the babies start coming home...but the last month is always kind of boring with nothing in the mail!! 7 more to go to have all of mine. Scrapper, Tracibug, dottie Dodge, Cuppy April, Lovingrandma OK Darla, I think most have posted their updated status havent they?

Phannie1 04-29-2013 05:14 PM

Ok, I am away from home so I do not have my list in front of me but I know Gaijin is going home and two others. I have the blocks in the photo bucket but names have escaped me. (an Indian print and a butterfly print) Thanks for swapping, I will double check the names Friday.

ArizonaKAT 04-30-2013 09:17 AM

I just found out there's something called an iTrader Rating Notification on this site, oh, my :-(

I could have been adding these the whole time for you all.

OK, next thing on my list for the next swap is don't forget to add ratings.

quiltingmommy 04-30-2013 12:20 PM

I received three in the mail Monday! Wonderful blocks made by Alikat110, Missgigglewings, and Urgodschild2 all arrived safely. Pictures are being updated right now.

It have been so much fun getting mail from everyone. It seems like all that is ever in the box are bills and flyers. But by being in this swap there has been something to look forward to! Thinking and talking to my youngest daughters (who are always jealous about my mail) and a friend led to an idea for a summer project. My daughters and the daughters of my friend are starting a post card project that will hopefully give them enjoyment all summer long. I am hoping to enlist help from dozens of online friends (or future friends), who would be willing to send a post card or two to the girls; postcards that would represents their state or a future vacation state or site. Are you taking a cruise or vacation this summer can you pick up two postcards and mail them out to them? With your help this summer will be so fun. The excitement of receiving the postcards in the mail will be priceless.

Let me know if you can help and I will send our addresses on to you.

Thanks so much

We have your address, what are their names? I would love to send them some post cards. Phannie

quiltingmommy 04-30-2013 02:51 PM

My girls are Abigail, 4 and Elinore, 7. Any postcards would be appreciated. It will be really fun to collect them and tie in a geography lesson as well...I'm thinking of getting a map poster and they can tag where they got post cards from. I was talking over this idea with a friend who also has daughters ages 2-11 that we are doing the project with. You all should have my address, but I can PM their address to you if you want to help in our projects.

joanelizbay 04-30-2013 04:29 PM

Count me in Quiltingmommy! PM me your address and theirs. I will get my 8 year old granddaughter to help also! She and the other 2 8 year olds love getting mail from me so I surprise them quite often!

Has anyone been to Wal Mart lately and noticed them doing away with the 2 yard bolts of fabric they had hanging for sale? The one here in Boonville only has the fat quarter 97 cent fabrics left now...not that I ever bought any of their 2 yard bolts but its a shame they cant add more fabric, better fabric, instead of getting rid of what they had. The Wal Marts in Columbia have great fabric and two aisles of it!
