Fabulous blocks from everyone! Thank You!

Elisabrat 05-07-2013 05:00 AM

Moon: your an angel and a blessing. I can't imagine anything scarier than watching your loved one helpless like that. Amazing what we are capable of push come to shove. My hubby says its like this.. there are people who run out of buildings in a fire and there are people who run in. He has had to help no less than 2 (believe it was three) people who were shot in drive by shootings in SF. He was a dispatcher, his window looked at a chevron station. Everyone would run and hide and his boss said no don't go out.. he was the guy who went to aid the man down. The chevron employees? locked in the store. he held them til help got there and not on time either.. the families were very thankful .. its not easy being strong. A high five and a high ten for doing more than the average bear.

Quilting: I love the blocks that came in. Wondering if any of you are fast charlies can you post what you have done like putting them together? I know Jaba had hers more than half way done she was sewing rows as they came in. And please.. after everyone is done, post a picture of what you made with your blocks. Especially in your folder. This way those who think about joining the next one can go sneak peak them and make the decision do I want to join or not. usually those pics are the push oh yes yes I do! love my quilt from rubies. will post it this week to show you ah what can be done :)

Does anyone know what the name of this block is? Its a scrap quilt and is 5" finished.

moonrise 05-09-2013 02:45 PM

It looks like the same pattern as the signature blocks I made in a swap awhile back. Those started out with a 4-1/2" square, with 2-1/2" squares diagonally sewn on two corners to make triangles. But it could easily be enlarged to use 5-1/2" squares with 3" (check my math - I just woke up!) squares to make the triangles.

Then just turn each square opposite the one beside it as they're sewn together.

I'll see if I can find the pattern. BRB!

Edit: Here you go. Just make them 5-1/2 unfinished", and reverse the lights/darks, and there's your quilt! :D

Rec'd a fantastic block from moonwork today. will definately try to post blocks tomorrow. Also a wonderful note from your Father. Cannot tell you how much it means to hear from him. Lost my dad as a teenager and this makes me think of wonderful memories. Please let him know. By-the-way, did you make the card? It is darling and I must steal the idea. Love to you both

moonwork42029 05-09-2013 07:42 PM

Jaydee...he just cackled when I read him your message. He wouldn't let me see what he wrote and just had a naughtiness about him that cracked me up.

I didn't make the cards but picked them up at a church bazaar several years ago. I kept thinking...oh I could do that but they were raising money for their ladies fund and it's so much nicer to just pick them up and see their happy faces that someone wanted what they worked on. I let Dad have a set of them and he has to go through each of them to send and then pick out just the right one.

Received a wonderful 3D bowtie block from OKDarla...will post picture tomorrow hopefully.

I love them all! Thanks so much!

According to my spreadsheet, I haven't received finished blocks from:

babyfire04
cuppy
dottie dodge
girlscouts1
lovngrandma
Roseysue
Scrapper
Tracibug

If anything looks wrong, let me know and I'll double-check. :)

joanelizbay 05-10-2013 05:43 AM

Moonrise, thanks so much for the information. I pulled up the pattern from quilterscache and it sort of matches the one I posted but in the "real" quilt a friend showed me the white square in the middle was a solid piece. In the Indian Hatchet block it looks like the inside square would be made out of 4 triangles to make the square?? Im going to try the one you linked to though!! Thanks so much.

babyfireo4 05-10-2013 11:34 AM

I've received a couple more blocks, hoping that I can have some sewing time tomorrow to catch up my spreadsheet and work on blocks :) The last three days have been filled with helping out at my mom's house, she is putting in pavers and building a little wall to separate a patio area from a kids play area. I need a nap.... lol I think it's all finished up as of an hour ago though *fingers crossed* so back to sewing for me!

moonwork42029 05-10-2013 03:26 PM

Has anyone else had problems finding the liquid Sta-Flo starch? It seems like it is not available any longer at Walmarts or other smaller stores.

I can order some from Amazon but the shipping said it would be in 7 - 10 WEEKS...how's that for a quick turnaround, lol.

TheMamaHauser 05-10-2013 04:31 PM

I've never heard of it. I use Best Press.

jaydee3 05-10-2013 05:02 PM

I use best press also, but I have two quilt teacher friends that use diluted liquid starch and like it best. Will contact them and see where they get it.

marcialee 05-11-2013 04:36 AM

I am excited to start another swap...I am gonna start looking for the right fabric. Thanks everyone for the great blocks. I will get them all together and post one picture. Hope everyone is ok with that instead of individual postings

I got a pretty block from OkDarla on Friday. Thanks for swapping, Phannie

jaydee3 05-11-2013 07:43 AM

Moonwork,my friend says she uses niagra and still gets it at Walmart or Target.

I am also excited about the next swap...have my fabric ready and going to have it out early this time. I have enjoyed chatting with everyone. Feels like we really get to know each other. Thanks to you all

oldcatlady 05-11-2013 11:09 AM

Quiltingmommy, your snowflake block is done, well almost!

Quiltingmommy, I am so NOT a paperpiecer! I won't even tell you how many hours I spent on this block-it is really pathetic,

I got it out of the Quiltmakers Blocks mag and I really love it! Before I printed it off I made sure the print size was correct. I just finished it and I can not believe it is only 12 1/8"

I took a pic and posted it in my Boom 9 sent album before I try to add a border. I wanted a pretty pic before I happen to screw it up! LOL

Gaijin, I mailed your block yesterday. When I took it to the postoffice, I had to hold my breath. The postal clerk was the one who always gives me a hard time and I thought for sure he was going to tell me I had to pay the 'package rate' but he just charged me the rate for a large envelope since it did not go through the little slot thingy they use. :) so it was only $2.90, Yea! I will send the signature square seperate.

I have recently recieved my blocks from goldendog55 & moonwork. These are so fantastic. Goldendog, I am currently debating whether to make a matching pillow for the baby quilt I am completing, or use it as center and make it a reversible. Picure of fabric for back included as well as re posting picture of complete baby quilt top.

alikat110 05-11-2013 11:49 AM

Now, just for record:

Moonwork...you block will be mailed next week. This is the final one from me.

I have not recieved grownups from:
Babyfire04
Cuppy
Dottiedodge
Lovingizabella
Navarre2011
Lovnggrandma
Oldcatlady
Phanni1
Roseysue
Scrapper
Traciebug

Now, I am not as meticulous a record keeper as I should be, so if you sent yours to me, let me know and I will check.....

Abby's Mom 05-11-2013 03:24 PM

Final 5 blocks are on their way home to:Mosher92, Tracibug, Jaydee3, Lovingrandma & Girlscouts.

joanelizbay 05-11-2013 05:59 PM

I know they have 3 weeks to finish the swap but was hoping they are all in good health and nothing disasterous keeping them away from sewing! Want you to know I walked thru the fabric section of Wal Mart today and didnt buy a single thing! I was proud of myself! LOL

Phannie1 05-11-2013 06:31 PM

Joan, I admire your restraint. I joined the fabric moratorium here on the board. That was January. Fell of the wagon quickly and haven't jumped back on. I found that, as soon as I restricted myself, the fabric became more enticing. Guess I am officially out of the moratorium! Funny thing is, I don't feel the same urgency to buy now that I am no longer restricting myself.

Phannie1 05-12-2013 03:29 PM

Add another grown-up block to drop in the mail to Old Cat Lady. thanks for swapping. Phannie

Quiltingmommy, I added a tiny white border to make the paperpieced block 12 1/2" , when it is added to the others I think the white border will look like a line of piping. I posted a pic in my album. I will be sending it and another block for you, along with the small left over fabric I have, and a block for Scrapper out in the mail tomorrow.

I received a beautiful block from OK Darla- I LOVE the pink fabric you used :)

Elisabrat 05-13-2013 05:10 AM

Tracibug is fine she is just trying to complete all her projects.. one at a time. Think she will get your blocks out on time or close to it :) Lovngrandma fell and injured her elbow so I think she is on a slow time frame on her blocks too. Thats the update on two of your swappers that blocks are do from.

I havent counted mine but think there are a fair number still out there coming in so I am patiently waiting. I have so many projects to complete I think I can afford to be patient. I will start sewing them together come the end of the swap and pray all are back by then so they can make it into my little projects. If they come in too late they go in the one day I will do something box. Not much comes out of that one lol.. ufo's.. where do we get so many from??

dottie dodge 05-13-2013 09:14 AM
Has anyone heard from t or dottie dodge? I know they have 3 weeks to finish the swap......... I'm still around and sewing my blocks. My deadline for myself is to have all in the mail this Friday. Keeping my fingers crossed.:o

I just went to walmart and bought all their on sale easter material for .75 a yard. Don't know what I'll do with it but I got it :-)
