Thanks for the offer Esq- I think J2 looks like something I can handle. I'm excited about this and have to laugh at how fast it is growing! If we want multiples, we better pick fast or the half way easy ones will be gone and I'm not confident in my ability to do more than a simple one!

Okay - yes, this is getting really exciting!! I'm planning to do the DJ Quilt-a-long so I better get used to being outside my comfort zone. But I have to make one of those, not 18!! Actually, knowing me, I'll make several before I get the block to what I want it to look like!

MNQuilter 08-11-2009 05:32 PM

don't forget J2 for me!

Bettia

some one is doing F4 already but L8 is kinda similar so it shouldn't be to hard to put together.

this is L8, Would you like to switch to this instead

Please and thank you.
Bettia

you got it.

do you need me to send you templates/foundation/cutting for the new L8 block?

I'm not familar with foundation.
Also, I didn't receive labels, was I suppose to?

foundation - is just the fancy way of saying the paper piecing pattern. i think people started to use that term because of English Paper Piecing and things were getting mixed up.

Tuesy,
What kind of rulers did you purchase?

Bettia

I bought the Dear Jane Rulers. I had seen them for sale with the software when I was looking at it, but went with getting the software at Joann's. One can never have enough rulers.. right?

Sew, do ever get on this site and it's like nothing else is going on. I still have to do 3 blocks for the yellow/blue swap, I just check it once in awhile. I'm also going to make the mystery quilt and what am I doing?
I'm where the action is. It's just so exciting.

JoanneS 08-11-2009 06:36 PM

Paper vs foundation = foundation stays on the back and is usually a firmly woven fabric - not musline, because it shrinks too much. Paper is torn off when you finish. They are the same basic idea though, and you get sharp corners with either method.

I must of missed something. What is the DJ labels? Is this something that will come with the software? (mine software is due to be here on the 17th)

kluedesigns 08-11-2009 06:38 PM

yes its inside the software program.

its these really nice quilt labels to put on the back of your work.

you're gonna love it. its far exceeded my expectations. i really just wanted to be able to print out the paper piecing patterns and to be able to alter some of the designs.

the added bells have just put the program over the top wonderful and i can't believe the price joanne's is selling it for - i would have still loved the program at retail price but to get it for $40 what a deal!

Esqmommy 08-11-2009 07:29 PM

What sort of rulers are you getting? I got one when I bought the book that is a triangle and this weekend I bought a 1-inch/6 inches long ruler. Anything else I should get?

Speaking of PP patterns, I forgot to say Thank you for the link you posted on the fountain papers. I ordered 2 sets yesterday. I think it'll help me in doing PP with good paper.

your list of rulers looks good. do you have a way to check for square on 5 inch blocks? if not, i think you can use the small block that came with the set.

so far, with the few DJ blocks of made i've used my 6 x 12 ruler and my squaring ruler.

i'm really interested in the triangle one - it will make cutting them and squaring that much easier.

i just don't think squaring a triangle block without that ruler would be easy.

I don't know if you're talking to me or not, but I just bought the Dear Jane Rulers.. There were 2 of them. The software I bought didn't come with rulers.

Esqmommy 08-11-2009 07:40 PM

Yes I got a 5 inch square ruler too- forgot about that! Very helpful for these little babies.

i just love that paper because you can see thru it.

so you don't need to pin, glue, or iron the fabric in place.

additionally, when you use a tiny stitch the paper comes off without leaving any bits behind the stitches.

i think her price is very fair and much cheaper than buy freezer paper for the printer.

Hi Girls!
Although I'm not participating in the Christmas Dear Jane exchange (I am gearing up for January), I am so thoroughly enjoying reading all of your input. Your blocks are beautiful!
Klue -
When we start our Dear Jane in January, will we all be working on the same block at the same time? Will you be posting the patterns to paper piece the blocks (with the exception of applique which I'm going to have to learn)?
I am so excited about this group project, and thank you for all your work in doing it.
I just purchased the software from JoAnn's, and the rulers from Ebay.
Now I just have to decide on fabric!

WOw this exploded after I left work yesterday.

Anyhow I made a sample block and it turns out I love the fabrics  but I do have a question, yesterday (since I don't have freezer paper) I just used copy machine paper. It worked fine for sewing but taking it out WHAT A NIGHT MARE will freezer paper work better?

Oh and 1 more do I cut off or tear off 1 piece before piecing the piecing them together? so I don't have two pieces of paper in the seam.

should one side be removed before piecing them together?

Wow!! I didn't have time to visit the forum yesterday, I can't believe were up to three sets!! I can't wait to get started - just have to wait for my fabric to arrive!! :D This is very cool!!! :D

yes, the idea is for everyone to kinda work on the same stuff together but there will be some people behind and some ahead and then some will just rearrange the work order just because it suits them better.

i'll be working 1 week ahead of the group that way i can post the method i used for that weeks blocks. if its paper piecing i'm going to show the number order of the pattern and then the finished product because there are many great paper piecing tutes (no need to make another).

then if someone did a different method then me i'm going to request that they post their method too.

then of course everyone will post their finished products so we can all drool over them.

the hope is to have threads going that can be turned into a complete full dear jane tute on the forum as a permanent record.

i'm starting to put together a schedule of blocks. the idea is 6 weeks on/1 week off to catch up.

the months will look something like this

Jan = easy blocks
Feb-May = a mix of all levels and all styles of blocks
Jun-Aug = easy blocks
Sept-Oct = a mix of all levels and all styles of blocks
Nov-Dec = easy blocks
Jan-April = finish up any remaining blocks, sew the top together, and quilt the sandwich.

Renee did you put your stitch length way down to 1.4 or 1.2 if you make the stitches tiny the paper comes out easier. It also helps not to distort the block when you do tear away the paper.

i agree 100% regular paper for paper piecing is a nightmare.

there is a method of paper piecing that doesn't require you to sew thru the paper. joannes was kind enough to provide us with this link on the method and she did in fact use it to make her blocks.

http://www.twiddletails.com/store/in...0173popcim8mb2

i use a psuedo type vellum for my paper piecing. i like it because i can see thru it so i don't need to pin, glue, or iron any fabric into place (big time saver).

then when you use a tiny stitch the paper just rips out without leaving one bit behind.

here's a link to the paper i use

http://webstore.quiltropolis.net/sto...3&Item_ID=1087

as far as this block, i would remove all the paper and then assemble the block.

some times thats not always the case and you really make that decision based on the project.

when you leave it and sew everything together its much harder to get all the paper out because its trapped in some of the seams.

I believe so it always starts at the lowest level on this machine but like I said I used copy paper, not freezer paper. But I'm not sure about the sandwiched seams where there is two pieces of paper.

reneebobby 08-12-2009 04:33 AM

Okay gotcha

This was just a sample but I liked how it came out so I need to buy more green. The block is square just I took the picture at an angle, so it does look distorded.

NorBanaquilts 08-12-2009 04:39 AM

yes, we'll be doing everything together, from the first block to the binding and quilt label on the back.

cheriffic 08-12-2009 04:49 AM

I use onion skin paper it is like tissue paper which is like the vellum and the tiny stitch. I usually do up all the blocks and then sit and watch TV and pick the papers out. My husband said what a pain huh? I said no it is actually calming. I guess I am strange like that but PP is my thing I love it

Thanks for the advice, it was my first paper piece so every little bit of advice I can get I'll take, since I really want to do 2 or 3 blocks but signed up for 1 so far and they are going fast. Faster than bingo.

can you see thru the onion skin paper?
can you put it in a printer?
where do you get it?
does it leave in any bits when removed?
how much does it cost?

sandpat 08-12-2009 05:45 AM

Wow..the list is really growing!! Thanks for the links for the rulers and paper...I still have to get the software...maybe I'll have time to order it today.
