Halloween Block Swap 2014

This swap is for all types of Fun Halloween blocks. The signups will close August 30th.

The swap is open to all levels of quilters. Please use 100 percent good quality cotton fabrics that are prewashed. I understand that if you are using pre-cuts (jellyrolls, charm packs) that is impossible.

Please make your blocks before you sign up for this swap. The signups will close on August 30th and the blocks should be mailed to me by the September 15th deadline. I am happy for you to send them early if you want to. I am not in any other swap that would mix up with these. So pm me and I will give you the address to send them as soon as you want.

Send me a pm to sign up for the swap.

The finished block size can be any size block divisible by three. Note! Beginning with a 6 1/2" square. No 3 1/2" blocks on this swap!

For example...the finished sizes can be, 6 1/2 x 6 1/2 , 6 1/2 x 9 1/2, 9 1/2 x 12 1/2 sized blocks. The max size being 12 1/2 x 12 1/2 . Please do not send just a cut piece of fabric as a block. It won't count towards you block sets and would have to be returned to you.

The swap will be for sets of six (6). The limit of sets is 4 per swapper.

It is possible that you will not get the exact same sizes back as you sent. Also please note, you will not be getting any of your blocks back, so if you wish to have one of your own blocks, please make another for yourself to save for your quilt. Place each set into a plastic baggie with your name and board name attached to each block so the person receiving it will know who made it.

The block images can be spooky, silly, creepy or cute.
Lets make this one a dusk or night time quilt. That means medium colored backgrounds or fabrics. Say in blues, blacks or purples or whatever?? Just no white or lights, ok?. The pieced blocks can have some whites or images on the block can be white and be in whichever colors you wish. Brights are very fun and work great for halloween.

There are many images and blocks available on the web, or make something up on your own. Embroidery works too! Lets have some fun with this! Just remember, if you are doing applique, you must sew it to the blocks in such a way that it is nice and washable later. You can't just iron it on and call it good.

>>> IMPORTANT POSTAGE INFO!!! Use only the U. S. postage stamps for the return envelopes!!! The metered stamp is no good after a very short time and will not be any good because of the difference in the time you mail them and the time I swap them out!!

Mail your block sets to me in a flat rate envelope and have a self addressed flat rate return envelope with the postage attached inside with your bagged blocks. With the flat rate envelope we don't have any problems returning them to you. Another good reason is the flat rate envelopes have confirmation numbers that you can check where they are as they are traveling here.

If you want to sign up, please pm me by clicking on my name. Should you have any questions or completion problems please contact me by pm.

Please read all the general swap rules of the board these apply to this swap.

This is sure to be oh so fun! Join up and lets get spooky creative everyone! Halloween is a coming!

Lets share our blocks as they are finished and talk about our bocks till the swap is done. That is part of the fun of the swap.

Anoka Quilter 06-15-2014 04:01 PM

I love Halloween an will have to get involved in this one. Have a couple projects I am working on but will definitely be making some Halloween blocks to share. After all I am from the Halloween Capital of the world, Anoka, MN.

RedGarnet222 06-16-2014 08:36 AM

Hi Everyone! I am waiting on my background fabrics to start mine. It should be here by the end of the week.

I have three blocks planned so far and I think you gals will like them.

We have eight sign ups so far. Come on girls, ask your buddy's to join too.

owlvamp 06-17-2014 05:07 AM

Let me see if i have any halloween fabric.. Need to see what i come up with. then will let you know if i can join. i absolutely love halloween.

Billi 06-17-2014 05:36 AM

Wow this looks like fun. I love the idea of the differnt sized blocks.

So my question is since most of us do not have haloween blocks hanging out and we don't join till our blocks are finished is there a limit to how many can join? I would hate to be working away thinkining I could join then see that it's a closed swap. Also can each block in the set of 6 be a different size?

Anoka Quilter 06-17-2014 07:07 AM

I wish I would have to see if I had any halloween fabric. I have a whole tub of it.

If the blocks come back in different sizes and shapes, how do I fashion them into a quilt? As one can tell, I am a rather new quilter. And being the accountant that I am, I see "uniformity" in my mind all of the time - very little of the "artist"!

Thanks - Rena

I would be happy to go ahead and join you up if you are sure you want to participate. There are a few who have joined without being finished with theirs yet. Just pm me and let me know you are ready to join, ok?

The six blocks in a set are all the same block size and image. (Whether it is appliqued or pieced) That makes it easier to share blocks with the others.

Hi Rena,
Here is a couple of the quilts from past swaps that members posted for us to see.

RedGarnet222 06-17-2014 08:27 AM

You see that is why we need them in the sizes I posted. They fit like a puzzle. But you could just use a border and separate them into a block by itself too.

pamesue 06-17-2014 09:28 AM

I would love to join this swap....so that I am clear - I make my blocks before I sign up? and there are 6 blocks in a set? I can sign up for 4 sets?

I will start this evening search thru all of the halloween fabric I have. :-)

Billi 06-17-2014 10:32 AM

Alright got it, looks like I have to do it I love the quilts you just showed us.

RedGarnet222 06-17-2014 10:35 AM

Ok Billi! I got you all signed up on the list. Happy Halloween block making! LOL...

I too love the quilts - I see that some of the blocks have borders or just squares of fabric to fill the various holes. I also have since thought that some small blocks could be joined into a table runner, a larger one into a wall-hanging or a pillow - a lot of cute possibilities.

I am going to see what fabric I have - I know I have some and then see what I can get in the stores now.

RedGarnet222 06-17-2014 12:55 PM

Great rbwiese! Let me know when you are ready to sign up!

Billi 06-17-2014 03:22 PM

Well so far I have a cat block planned (just tossed all the fabric into the wash) I'm still working on my other ones.

Is it awful that as I'm looking at your quilts I'm going oooohhhhh I want that one and that one I hope someone makes that one......hahaha they are all so dang cute.

RedGarnet222 06-17-2014 03:42 PM

Ha ha ha .... I know Billi! I want some of the ones from the last swap I didn't get in on. I plan on making at least one for a charity silent auction.

I think my first one is a witch .. Cackle cackle... She is really funny!

There was a post on the swap board that got me all excited muse and sew. I guess it jump started my creative juices and I went for it. Hopefully there won't be any wildfires this year. The last year I hosted it looked like London here it was so smoky because of them. Although I plan on putting them into plastic bag in a plastic tub until the swap day.

I have you all signed up for the swap now too.

owlvamp 06-18-2014 12:45 PM

Thank you now will see what I can come up with.

klaws 06-19-2014 03:00 AM

This sounds like so much fun. I love Halloween and Christmas. I have plenty of fabric that I'm sure I can come up with something. The quilt pictures are great!

RedGarnet222 06-19-2014 08:44 AM

Oh goody goody! Glad to have you Klaws! I am happy to sign you in for the swap.

dottie dodge 06-19-2014 09:08 AM

I am thinking about this swap. Are the blocks to be appliqued or can they be pieced? I really don;t like to do applique, I'm never satisfied with the outcome. But I have some fun halloween fabrics that would be great pieced blocks.

RedGarnet222 06-19-2014 12:06 PM

Oh dear YES! I just think the pieced blocks set the quilts off great. Please look back at the two quilt pictures I posted on the thread (pg.2) and see the pieced blocks in them. Let me know if you want me to sign you up dottie dodge.

Billi 06-19-2014 07:58 PM

So I got so excited I already have 2 sets finished and a moc up of a third set done is it customary for this swap to post pictures? Truthfully I'm kind of excited about them.

RedGarnet222 06-20-2014 08:35 AM

Oh yes PLEASE post them billi! I just love the banter and the show and tell part of the swap. I know there are others who do too. I am so excited about this swap. I found my four blocks that I will be making and as soon as I finish the donation quilt for the auction, I will be on this like right away. I love to play with the Halloween blocks. They are just so dang cute!
