Jaba - they're just fine.

If you'd like some extra blocks for yourself, consider using a 1/3 yd cut of fabric. You'll get 16 five inch squares.

Thanks Jane, you did get my blocks in the mail didn't you, mail said they were delivered last Friday???

The short answer is this: Jaba's blocks are laid out the same as the example I posted at the beginning. The long answer is: they're both fine and I certainly don't think wannabquilter needs to change her blocks. They're very nice. It has to do with how much you turn the center 4-patch.

Does anyone have any concerns about this? Please let me know.

I hope I answered your question - - -

Take a look at dottie dodge's link at http://www.northwestquilters.org/bom.html. If you are a visual person, the blocks shown for months December and June might help you to picture how to place the colors. But they have 2 prints with only one background. The original tutorial given for this swap at http://sewwonderful.blogspot.com/201...o-9-patch.html didn't address the layout for 4 prints... so Jane provided the example in post #2. It's understandable that wannaquilter and jaba each made the block differently-- it's a little confusing! :-) Jane's example shows both sets of diagonal squares being treated the same way. ...It's even confusing to me to explain it! Hopes something helped here. :-p

deenatoo 12-09-2013 06:15 PM

I have a question....I have not read through all the posts, but here goes.... Does each block have 4 different fabrics in it? 2 different brights and 1 white with black and 1 black with white?

givio 12-09-2013 09:13 PM

Deenatoo, Yes, all 4 squares in the block are different. You don't need to read all the posts-- where you see the page numbers, upper right of your screen, click on 'Last' to get to the beginning of the thread to see the posts with instructions and and a pictured example. Jane's a wonderful host, making a great swap for us. I'm doing the 30's block swap right now, but I plan to sign up for the batik swap that's coming up next month. It's a great little block that is sooo versatile! It's cute in all the examples I've seen. I hope you join too! :-)

Yes, you are correct. How many sets are you making?

Jane

deenatoo 12-10-2013 06:55 AM

Thanks for both of your answers. The first block I made I screwed up....I just made it with one bright and one black/white. It looks good, but when I looked back at the samples, I realized it was not right. I wanted to make sure before I went on.

Jane...I will make 6 sets. I just moved and most of my stash is still packed, so it has been challenging to find stuff. I had been collecting black/white to make a quilt of all black, white and red....I have not located the box yet, but I know it is marked so I don't have to open all the boxes to find it.

Thanks again,
Gerri

createfourpaws 12-10-2013 07:21 AM

Gerri, at least you have a good reason for not being able to find your b/w. I was at the quilt store a few weeks ago and bought some more black/whites, now I can't find them, went to cut some 5 in stripes last night and low and behold they are no where to be found. UGH I hate it when I do that. I am hoping to find them today to get some started.

Here's my first block and the rest of my choices so far. Wondering if they will all work.

givio 12-12-2013 11:11 AM

Mom-6!! Absolutely perfect! Lovely! Those black and white prints are great! The brights are great! Wonderful choices! (don't forget to rotate the little squares and little strips to the correct location when you sew your blocks. Check Jane's post #2 for the example of the layout of pieces.)

jclinganrey 12-12-2013 12:42 PM

Mom-6

Your blacks/whites are fabulous. All the brights minus the pinks are great. In the quilt block, the diagonal, from bottom left to upper right (using your picture as reference) needs to be: large orange, small orange, small yellow, large yellow. It's that darned center 4 patch. I had trouble with mine too. Hope that helps!

Jane

mom-6 12-12-2013 07:38 PM

I was trying to make everything alternating in all directions. Lol! That's the only one I've stitched together. Yea!

createfourpaws 12-14-2013 09:34 PM

I have my black/white squares cut, have cut 5 inch strips from my bright moda marbles. they need to be ironed before sub cutting them. Will be next weekend before I am able to get the started on sewing them together. My son and daughter in law are in town this weekend.

I am liking what I have cut apart so far. Will post pictures once I get some of the sets together.

dottie dodge 12-20-2013 09:56 AM

Count me in for this swap and sign me up for 6 sets. My fabric is in the washer.

The sign up is posted for the January Batik swap. If you're interested, please take a look and let me know!

I am working on my blocks this weekend, and will start working on the batiks also. I have binding to finish on a quilt today as well. Finally finished one of the t-shirt quilts I am working on.

jclinganrey 12-22-2013 09:41 AM

This question has come up several times, '. . do we get one of our quilt blocks back?' At first the answer was 'no' but I am really re-thinking this whole thing. Please let me know - would you like to get one of your quilt blocks back? Which would also mean, if you made more than one set, one of each set?

Let me know!

Merry Christmas to all my QB quilt buddies!

Jane

MaryMo 12-22-2013 10:23 AM

I usually make an extra block or two so I would like to get blocks different than my own back .... but sometimes it is inevitable that mine come back to me, just not one of each of the sets swapped. If it happens, it is ok but not consistently. Thanks for asking opinions Jane.

createfourpaws 12-22-2013 12:07 PM

I am ok either way. I will be making one for myself of the blocks I send in.

jaba 12-22-2013 01:17 PM

I usually have enough fabric to make another block, depending on the theme. But if you use FQ's, they just make 1 set of 6 and I really like having one of my own blocks. I would certainly be using up some of these FQ's that I have instead of cutting into yardage.

dottie dodge 12-22-2013 02:09 PM

I like to have some of my fabric in my quilts so I always make blocks for me to keep. Plus it seems silly to mail them to you only to have you mail the same ones back to me!

Dragonfly Nana 12-22-2013 05:18 PM

I agree with others - If I want one of mine I will make an extra

Muse&Sew 12-22-2013 08:30 PM

Easy enough to make one for myself. :)

happylab 12-23-2013 10:06 AM

I'm making extra blocks for myself as well. No need to have one of my own back. But if you do send one of mine back, that 's okay .

mom-6 12-26-2013 07:22 PM

Hope everyone had a wonderful Christmas!
Got all my squares cut for six sets of black/white, white/black, brights. Have three sets sewn together as basic four patches and one of each set finished. Other three sets might get sewn tonight (or might not). We shall see.

createfourpaws 12-27-2013 04:37 AM

You are further than I am. I have all my squares cut, now to sit in front of the machine and start sewing them together. After I finish the over and under quilt then I will be sewing these together and then start working on the next month's batiks.

dottie dodge 12-27-2013 10:55 AM

Have all my squares cut! Will start putting them together today.

jclinganrey 12-28-2013 07:56 AM

Also, please everyone, put your QB screen name as well as your real name on and inside your package. I don't know what is from who without it!

We have 19 swappers doing the black/white/brights! That's amazing!

Help!!! Not sure I put it back together once I cut them apart and sewed them. First block is pre cut, then sewn back together

want input before I cut anymore apart.

Thank for the help.

Dragonfly Nana 12-29-2013 05:08 PM

CFP - You did make a mistake with your rotation. The center squares should be in the same position as the larger outer squares. You only move the two piece strips (blue/white; pink/black; white/pink; black/blue)
I find it helpful to:
1) keep the pieces laid out as the whole block
2) sew all of the same set at once
3) press each set and put it back in the block layout before moving on to the next set

I hope this helps

Dragonfly Nana...thanks for your input

Here is one I just cut, and have turned. Does it look correct now before I sew it together.
