MamaHauser finally talked me into joining a rr. She's been trying for a few years to get me to try one. I'm in if there is still space.

ssnare 07-01-2013 01:49 AM

Welcome terianddylan. Send your info to MamaHauser. Everyone that has asked so far will be able to join. Be sure and send your info to MamaHauser.

Wonnie 07-01-2013 01:59 AM

MamaHauser and paperpieceme......thanks so much for helping Sherry. We should have a lot of fun!

jclinganrey 07-01-2013 03:37 AM

Hello all!

I'm just finishing up a Row Robin with ssnare,
MaryLane and Wonnie which has been fun. Looking forward to adding some new people to the mix. Welcome!

I'm an RN too, nearly 20 years now. I work in cardiac/telemetry and oncology. I've been sewing since I was 10 years old and have been quilting 30+ years. I owned a quilt shop in IL for 5 years which was quite an experience. Now I'm back in Southern California. Much happier here. I'm not much for applique or hand work. For me, binding is one of those 'necessary chores' LOL

I'm still trying to decide on my center block. I'm think an Autumn theme but not sure. What is everyone else thinking??

Jane

jclinganrey 07-01-2013 04:01 AM

I meant to add that I have 2 grown children; my son is 28 and my daughter is 24. I've been single for several years. I'm 52 and enjoy swing dancing to big band music. Aaahhh, Sinatra and Benny Goodman. I also go sailing and enjoy traveling whenever I can.

This Round Robin seems to be growing by leaps and bounds!

I am a transplant survivor! and currently waiting for another transplant but I hear the waiting list in Montana is half the length of time that CA has. This is extremely lucky for me. I love quilting, cooking and having lots of quiet time. My cats are my close companions. I am not great at all with applique. I use it more for wall hangings and things that dont need tons of washing. I love piecing blocks however and playing with lots of color. This swap excites me because I will work on quilts that are not necessarily something I might make myself and the variety of styles is always a learning experience. I find I am surprised at how many things I end up liking that I would previously have said no thank you to making. I cant wait til the teams are up and running and hope everyone is up for some goofy chatter. I am grand at goofy. I figure you only live once (or in my case twice) so why not enjoy the time you have?

ssnare 07-01-2013 07:55 AM

Brat, what kind of transplant did you have and what kind are you waiting for?

I am still trying to figure out what my center will be. I have several different panels. One is Oriental. I also have a flower center that I made when I first learned how to applique that I have not gotten to do. I might even do one of my cross stitched pieces.
Elisabrat, I think I purchased musical guitar fat quarters from you and found more of the same fabric, which I have sent out in different boom swaps. I now have 48 blocks to make my son a quilt. He graduated from college in Dec. with music degree. He plays guitar and drums and wants to set up sound systems for various groups.

paperpieceme 07-01-2013 08:54 AM

i am excited to be joining in on this one, i have done a bunch of doll quilt swaps and a couple of mug rugs and a boomerang swap. i was looking at fabric this morning to decide what the center of this one might be. tempted to try a couple of different things but who knows. I also am starting a mystery quilt on my own, i printed a free mystery from the internet and handed DH all but the first clue and cutting instructions, i told him not to give me the next step until have this step done. well off to pick the kids up from summer school.

Dragonfly Nana 07-01-2013 03:15 PM

Wow ladies - I know you will have a ball with this. We sure are having fun with the one I am in with Jaba, Brat and TheMamaHouser

AmyB 07-01-2013 05:04 PM

TheMamaHauser used her mad convincing skills on me yet again. I'm in.

moonrise 07-01-2013 05:34 PM

After thinking about it, I probably need to sit this one out. I'm in the middle of remodeling my home office/craft room, then the new Boomerang swap and Christmas projects will be taking over, and I don't want to over-commit. I'll catch y'all next time, though. :)

Elisabrat 07-01-2013 05:36 PM

Ssnare I had a liver transplant 14 months ago and am awaiting a kidney. there was a bit of hope it might come back but well they didnt so I am on Stanfords list and hoping to get on one in Montana also. the more the merrier! I sorta had multi organ failure all at once.. gall bladder is gone now too.. I am ready to say thank you! I have had enough now! like give me a salad plate of troubles not a dinner platter! lol it is what is is is my motto. I am lucky. that is an absolute truth. This living thing.. its not over rated. :)

onto fun things! Dragonfly you forgot Nexxus also! one big happy family.. now we can be a bunch of big happy families!

jaba 07-01-2013 05:45 PM

Goodness Brat I had no idea! Bless your heart. I am happy you are one strong chickee! This is my first time on this swap..looking forward to it.

ssnare 07-01-2013 06:50 PM

AmyB, glad you are in. I was going to help "Mama"(that is what I am going to call TheMamaHauser, because it is too long to type every time) to twist your arm. LOL.
Moonrise, we will miss you. But we understand.
Brat, I am glad you are hanging in there.

Dragonfly Nana 07-01-2013 07:14 PM

yes Jaba, I am going to play- Kelly just accepted me.
I think we still need 4 more to make a full group .....

She warned me that you were going to be tag-teaming me, so I figured I'd better just cave and get it over with and save you both the energy!

Elisabrat 07-01-2013 07:35 PM

they will come especially with more persuasion! people are good at last minute sign ups. I am good at singing to get them to come see whats up here. so close your ears ladies its concert time at the old quilting board :)

ssnare 07-01-2013 10:11 PM

AmyB and Dragonfly Nana, welcome. Brat, looking at your avatar, are you saying,"It is'nt over 'til the fat lady sings"? LOL.

Nexxus831 07-01-2013 10:28 PM

ok lets see, I am 42, wife, mother to 3 adopted children and stay at home. I didn't start quilting until a few years ago before that I wouldn't ever touch a sewing machine. Then I had a local friend who encouraged me to take a quilting class and I haven't looked back since. My mother has a long arm and been quilting for all my life, you can imagine how excited and shocked she was when I texted her a picture of the mini quilt I made. My mother and I try to get together and quilt as often as we can. I am excited to join this round robin and now the task to find a design for my center block

Elisabrat 07-02-2013 02:19 AM

Melinda, this quilting addiction.. its not such a bad thing is it? I use it for peace of mind.. when I quilt I can forget all of the other things that life has to work with and just focus on .. quilting. Cheap therapy I always say to the dh. He isn't so sure its 'cheap' lol but he does not mind at all as long as it keeps me happy. I think this he figures this way I wont say much about his fishing all the time. :)

I went to google images and typed in round robins and boy you get quiet a few to see also on pinterest there are a few that show up.. then its off to finding borders type that one in OMG just a few to choose from! I have been so boring with my borders.. I usually do .. strips on my quilts. this sure opens your eyes to the variety of rounds you can actually do. tons! I am thinking floral for this one. Of course there is a ton of fall fabric in my bin.. oh the choices to make oh dear this might require looking at my fabrics for a while. Tough job lol..

ps my avatar is a dq I did in Krystyna's DQ swap. We were to do crazy quilts. I figured a chicken suntanning at the beach was pretty crazy .. this is a peak into me. I sometimes take a regular concept and go left field with it. Here is the full picture:

Dragonfly Nana 07-02-2013 03:53 AM

I certainly didn't mean to leave Nexxus831 out of my statement - I did not see she had joined this one - sorry about that.
I agree that quilting is both an addiction and therapy....a good one on both fronts but I agree with Brat's DH - it is not cheap. LOL

Cogito 07-02-2013 05:17 AM

This is going to be a fun group/swap...I can tell! I have been quilting since the late 80's and never liked to sew before that. I still don't like to sew anything else! I have 3 grown children, only one daughter and she finally got tHe quilting bug in her late 30's...I am so happy bout that but alas, she lives 5 hours from me and works full time. :(

This adorable chicken now lives at my house since I was the lucky recipient in the doll quilt swap.

What is happening with this group? Is it closed?

travelinggramma 07-02-2013 03:27 PM

On Saturday My friend and I went to thrift stores, etc. We got the bargain of a lifetime!! Went to one where everything was 50% off. There was a pile of Quilting Magazines - over 20!! From 2007-2010. Normally they actually sell them for 10 for $1.00 but since it was 50% off -we got all 20+ for one dollar!! There were a few duplicates but we are having a blast looking. Will no doubt take us another month to actually read some of them!
So now i am drawing a blank as to what center to make to send out - anyone have theirs that they would like to post a picture of???

ssnare 07-02-2013 08:20 PM

I have a question for some of you who have done several round robins. I have a beautiful embellished cross stitch that I have done of 3 dolphins. It is on aida. If I put muslin on the back, do you think I could use it as a center?

Nexxus831 07-03-2013 12:01 AM

Oh I got my mother to join this round robin tonight. She doesn't post on here much at all, if she does it is usually me doing it for her at her request. Her name is LeStrong601. She is married to my father and just about ten days ago they were married for 45yrs. I have four brothers (two adopted) and then me. Both my father and brother are injured veterans. My brother who is disabled lives at home with them. My mom and him have an awesome close relationship. They have two black labs who love to be under foot when she is sewing. She does long arm quilting for people at a low cost because she loves doing it. One of these days she will get me to learn how to use it, for now I am terrified of it.

@Ssnare I don't see why that wouldn't work and put a few borders around it to help stabilize it.

What size centers are we starting with?

Elisabrat 07-03-2013 01:15 AM

NEXXUS I think the size is posted but I thought for some reason no larger than 18" for this swap? now I have to go look! Happy Anniversary Mom! 45 yrs GOOD FOR YOU!

I would think you would need to stabilize that embroidery and can it take repeated washings? or is it going to be a wall hanging when done? the fabric tends to .. stretch more than quilting cotton and it might not retain its original square/rectangle shape .. I personally would not do it.

jclinganrey 07-03-2013 01:20 AM

How many are we now?? I suspect the post of the original groups will be tweaked/adjusted/modified?

What centers are you considering?

Jane

ssnare 07-03-2013 03:44 AM

Center should be any size between 12 "- 24 "finished, dividable by 3. (Be sure to add ½” for seam allowance!) The center may be square or rectangular. (The center block, all borders, cornerstones, or whatever should be carefully squared each step of the project.). The size of your center will determine the finished size of your quilt.
Borders will be 3 1/2" - 9 1/2" dividable by 3's again. (The center block, all borders, cornerstones, or whatever should be carefully squared each step of the project.)
Option - in lieu of any one of the first 2 rounds, the block may be turned on point, if appropriate. Triangles are then added to each side of the "diamond" to make it into a square again. Appliqué or embellish the corners.
• The bigger you make it the more the people adding rounds will have to do.
• Fabric: 100% cotton, washed. Please do not use any scented spray or scented item near fabric. Some of our members have allergies to scents, animals, smoke, etc.

ssnare 07-03-2013 04:00 AM

Jane, our small group will have the 4 original people plus travelinggramma. I had to change this, I forgot that oldcatlady has cats. We now have 22 signed up. We are putting 5 members/group. We still need some information from several ladies and we still have room for more. Sign up is until July 15 @ midnight CDT. We will post the groups and rules when we get all the information. We will set up separate group threads. We will be asking for a leader for each group to help us. We will continue this thread, plus each individual threads.
I am looking at some different panels that I have for my center. I may do a humming bird panel or a dolphin panel. I might even do a sea turtle or a sea horse.

jaba 07-03-2013 07:09 AM

ssnare, I have done a bunch of X-stitch and stabilizer yes you have to use on the back if you are going to use it as a block. You would have to hand wash your quilt, the aida cloth will not stand up to a machine wash and make sure your threads are well secured. The wall hangings that I have done have to be hand washed and then blocked out to dry in order to keep their shape. Don't think you would be happy at all.
On another note you say your only keeping the original "5" group, how about the second set of 5, the swap was closed then so we stay the same also right? Then you opened it and are those the ones that will be grouped in 5's or are you dividing up that second set also??

TheMamaHauser 07-03-2013 07:19 AM

Jan, the original group is together and then for everyone else, I'm trying to coordinate according to special requests and allergies. The groups aren't set in stone yet because there is still time for new an exciting people (and their allergies) to join the group.

paperpieceme 07-03-2013 12:03 PM

hoping to make my center this weekend, i pawned the kids off on grandma (gotta love grandmas!) i had it narrowed down to two patterns... but when i went looking for the one, i found a glut of patterns, clippings, repcipes and ideas anyone else a paper hoarder? (and why did i go bold half way through this message?).

Wonnie 07-03-2013 03:08 PM

Used to be paperpieceme but one day I just decided enough is enough! Went to Sam's Club and bought a large package of plastic page covers and a large pack of white computer paper and a large looseleaf notebook. Took the articles, recipes, etc. just as they came off of the pile. Used a sheet of computer paper inside each plastic cover so one side didn't show through to the other and just started pasting each article with a glue stick onto the blank computer paper. I included sayings I had kept, whimsical characters I thought I might use some day down the road, ideas that popped into my head as I was doing it, and,yes ,recipes. It took as I remember maybe 3 days, maybe 4 working in the evenings to get it done. I threw a lot of stuff away as I went along as, realistically, I asked myself am I REALLY going to do this, make this, etc. Now I can sit down in the evening and browse through it like a magazine so it stays interesting but I, also, can FIND things with minimal effort. I know some people swear by using folders on their computers but I've had two crash and lost everything so, this works for me but maybe not for all ;)

Elisabrat 07-03-2013 04:06 PM

Grand idea! come on over let me show you my envelope of cut outs and tear outs and hand written recipes. I am avail all days of the week for you to organize for me! I will make you lunch as a reward!
