Round Robin Perfect 10's

Round Robin Perfect 10's
This round robin is meant to be a fun, social and learning experience. There is no skill level requirement, only to do the best work that you can. You should not feel that every round has to be a very complex design…sometimes the quilt will just need something very simple added at that particular point. If you have concerns about what to add at any point, feel free to ask for help from others in your group, the host of the RR, other sewing friends, or even the owner of the center. Remember…this is FUN!

Center should be any size between 12 "- 24 "finished, dividable by 3. (Be sure to add ½” for seam allowance!) The center may be square or rectangular. (The center block, all borders, cornerstones, or whatever should be carefully squared each step of the project.). The size of your center will determine the finished size of your quilt.
Borders will be 3 1/2" - 6 1/2" dividable by 3's again. (The center block, all borders, cornerstones, or whatever should be carefully squared each step of the project.)
Option - in lieu of any one of the first 2 rounds, the block may be turned on point, if appropriate. Triangles are then added to each side of the "diamond" to make it into a square again. Appliqué or embellish the corners.
• The bigger you make it the more the people adding rounds will have to do.
• Fabric: 100% cotton, washed. Please do not use any scented spray or item near fabric. Some of our members have allergies to scents, animals, smoke, etc.
• Include a label that each person may sign and a journal if desired. . Please use a Black Pigma pen or some type of black permanent fabric marker. You might want to leave enough room for everyone to list their name along with their board name, their city, state, country, and the date.

• Be sure to include instructions in your journal so the others know what you envision as a finished project. What will the finished project be used for: tablecloth, wall hanging, or lap quilt? Will your quilt have a season theme or color scheme?
• Each round should be worked. This means, a border needs to be more than just a single strip of fabric added. Examples of borders: add something in the corners, add several rows of borders, piece borders, appliqué borders, paper piece borders, hand embroider on borders, etc.. You can add an appliqué to a previous border, but you must add to that border.
This is a learning experience. Try new things!
• The owner is free to alter, add, adjust or do anything they want with the quilt.
We will be posting pictures with each round, unless you specify that you do not want to see your quilt until it is finished. For most of us…we just can’t wait.
Please stay on target for the mailing dates. You will have 2 months between mailings. If something happens that will cause you to be late mailing, please email the person who you will be mailing to and the leader of the group.

Graciously accept your finished quilt
Sometimes the final quilt owner will want to add more embellishments or add an additional border, but everyone who worked on your quilt used their best abilities. After the RR has closed, of course it is your quilt to do whatever you choose. We will all look forward to seeing the quilted final product! Please do not post pictures that show alterations or changes in someone else’s work though. Please be conscious of others feelings. If this isn’t acceptable to you, please DO NOT play.

Tips and Lessons Learned:
1. Print off the rules, mailing dates, your group mailing list.
You will be referring back to it.
2 Don’t panic…hang the top for a few days and let it speak to you. They tend to “tell you what they need next”.
3. If you are trying something new….do it on the separate border, do NOT sew it to the quilt until you are sure it worked.
4. Please DO NOT let tops pile up on you. If you need help, ask…there are others who can and will step in to help you through a time crunch bind. We can work it out.
5. Please handle the quilts carefully. We all drag them around to show them off to friends, guild members, LQS, etc. but when doing so, we can stretch the borders so the finished quilt doesn’t lie flat. Please make sure it does lie flat prior to mailing it on to the next person.
6. If for ANY reason, you feel the need to resign from doing this at ANY point in the "game", PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE let me know! It's not fair to the others for someone to just pull out, not tell anyone and keep what is not theirs.

I will give it a whirl, I am in another private round robin so this will be an fun extra for me! I love pieced work and playing with new fabrics and am in a ton of swaps. On the board I am known as "Brat" feel free to use that when you are speaking to me. I just moved to Wyoming from California this last week with my dh and two cats. I say.. bring it on!!!

oldcatlady 06-28-2013 05:21 AM

Hello everyone and thanks for letting me play along :)

I'm a nurse, like several of you I think, I am soo looking forward to retirement but I'm only 53 so have a long way to go. I've done a lot of different things from travel ER nursing to hospice, currently I work as a tele nurse doing disease management and I think I'm going to be able to work from home soon, doing the happy dance! :)

I've never been married. I live alone with 2 cats that are 17 yrs old that I got at the APL. I've driven across the country to california for travel nurse assignments with them twice! And up to NH and Maine. I think it is worse than traveling with kids! I've always told my family that I'm going to be one of those old ladies they find in a house alone with dozens of cats hence the name 'oldcatlady' :)

I have a huge yard that is bordered in perennial flower beds. It was a good idea at the time I bought my house 25 yrs ago but not some much now that I am older and overweight and have a bad back!

I love guilting, gardening, reading, watching TV and my cats. I hate hot weather and exercising!

OK, probably more than you wanted to know! I'm really looking forward to this but am a little nervous. I've never really done borders so I'm stretching my boundaries. I'm sure I will have a lot of questions.

ssnare and I have been in the Boom swap together before but I think I am new to the rest of you. I'm looking forward to getting to know you and working on your quilts :)

wanda lou 06-28-2013 08:39 AM

Hello guys thanks for letting me play.

ssnare 06-28-2013 08:51 AM

I am a registered nurse also. I recently retired from teaching CNAs. I am married. June 30th will be our 46th anniversary. I have 3 boys, and we have adopted our 16 year old granddaughter. We have 2 miniature poodles. I love flowers, but can't grow a thing. I love to do piecing and applique. I do not like to sandwich the quilt. LOL. I have done oil paintings of landscapes and water. I have made jewelry. I am artistic and creative. I belong to a sewing guild and a quilting guild. I also am a red hatter. I am working on a state flower quilt, a red/black/white quilt. I have blocks for a music, guitar quilt for my son. I also have blocks for a Betty Boop quilt plus other UFOs.

I have been in several boom swaps, 3 row robins, and 3 round robins. I have been quilting for 3 years. I am working on a cathedral window that is by hand. I have been working on it for 3 years. That is the first class I took, before I even knew how to cut with a rotary cutter.

I collect fairies, bears, dolls, thimbles, spoons. I like butterflies and dragonflies.
I am looking forward to our next adventure. I have really enjoyed working on everyone's rows in our row robin.

ssnare 06-28-2013 08:55 AM

Wanda lou, please tell us about yourself.

MaryLane 06-28-2013 11:36 AM

Hi, I am Mary. I am 48. I have three sons and have been married to my high school sweetheart since before I graduated high school We have three sons and one grandson. I am not a nurse but I did go to nursing school for a year before changing my major to chemistry. I work a 12 hour rotating schedule mainly so that I don't have to drive further to work.

I have sewn forever but only started quilting about 5 years ago. I also collect sewing machines. I should stop but my husband encourages it! I hate handwork. So, I try to do everything by machine. I have an embroidery machine and that is helpful. I also have an HQ16 midarm quilting machine.

I live on a farm. We have dogs for company and cats stay in the barn. Can anyone explain to me why I - who does not like cats - am the first person cats go to?

My favorite color is red and I am thinking of doing a red/white quilt for this row robin. But, patriotic also appeals to me.

Welcome to our new members!

Mary

jaba 06-28-2013 03:32 PM

Just sent in my info so will wait for a PM to see if there is a spot open. Think these round robins will be a fun swap to do.

ssnare 06-29-2013 06:59 AM

I have had 2 more people request to be in this swap. What would you think about having 2 groups of 4? Then we could increase the size of the rows to 3 1/2" - 9 1/2" and we would have 4 rounds due from Oct- April. We would use the same thread, same rules, shorter finish time.

TheMamaHauser 06-29-2013 07:45 AM

I am happy to join if there's a spot. I will PM now.

c joyce 06-29-2013 08:00 AM

Sending in my info. I did this a few years ago with members here and it was such a fun and exciting project. My finished quilt was really fantastic.

jaba 06-29-2013 08:03 AM

So it could be 2 groups of 5? That would work wouldn't it ssnare?

ssnare 06-29-2013 10:14 AM

Jaba, I have Mamahouser, and one other person now. We can do 2 groups of 5. I do not know how to change the title to say closed.

ssnare 06-29-2013 10:16 AM

This swap is full.

ssnare 06-29-2013 11:12 AM

Perfect, and I want to Thank you ladies very much for letting us participate in this swap with you. I love the one I'm in now and wanted to do another so badly. Love seeing the pics of what everyone comes up with. Now to think of what I want to do for my center.

ssnare 06-29-2013 11:25 AM

In the row robin , our group was #10, so we named ourselves "The Perfect Tens", so that is how this round robin became named what it is.

ssnare 06-29-2013 11:28 AM

Everyone, be sure and tell us about yourself. This will be fun. Let the fun begin. Start thinking about your centers and let the creative juices flow.

jaba 06-29-2013 05:34 PM

I sewed clothes quite a bit many years ago and then quit altogether and didn't start again until about 3 or 4 years ago. Had never sewn a quilt, saw one a lady had made, fell in love with it and bought it from her....$400 later I decided I could do it myself, so my adventure began. I'm hooked and I love it, still learning that's for sure but have time to do that. I am retired, remarried 17 yrs. ago, live in a very small rural town, 110 people, and love it. I am 67yrs. young and have 2 grown sons. Hubby has 2 sons and 1 daughter. We have a couple of acres with a lot of grass and large garden so it does take a little bit of time. Right now the strawberries are going crazy and the raspberries are getting ready to start. Love that fresh produce from our garden, so think the work is well worth it. Occasionally we go camping or boating...when we find the time.

Wonnie 06-29-2013 05:36 PM

Hello everyone! I'm 76 going on 29...if only I could convince my knees of that some days and remember to never look in the mirror!!! Love challenges and have never done a Round Robin but have loved working on the Round Row Robin we are finishing. Love to quilt, everything except the sandwiching....(YUCK!) Also, love applique, punch embroidery, thread crocheting, designing, not skilled but I do enjoy creating something different which usually ends up being whimsical and reading. Just entered my first Mug Rug Swap and the July Secret Pal Swap which I think will be fun. I'm not a competitivpersonexcept with myself...always looking for ways to "make it better" the next time.

Wonnie 06-29-2013 05:47 PM

OOPS........hit "Enter "before I was finished.....sorry.................

Have 4 grown children and six grandchildren ranging from 10 to 30...grew up in the city but have lived in the country for many years but not on a farm. My son and I are currently helping my daughter and son-in-law strip 4 layers of wallpaper off of 8 rooms to help them refurbish a delightful old home they just purchased. The only bad part is the hour drive both to and from the home every day. Love the beach, tree, flowers (unfortunately I have a very brown thumb) but love to take drives and enjoy other peoples beautiful yards.

paperpieceme 06-29-2013 06:15 PM

bummer, i always miss out on the ones that sound like the most fun.

TheMamaHauser 06-29-2013 06:28 PM

I'm getting ready to celebrate my 3rd or 4th anniversary of 29. I am getting ready to student teach this fall and graduate in December (dual mathematics & secondary ed)... I've been in school since 2007. We just moved to Montana (about 8 hours north of Jaba & Brat) about two years ago and we'll be where we are now for at least 3 more years until Doogie (my husband) retires. He's on the bomb squad and just got picked for promotion. I've been quilting since 2008, cross-stitch since 2002. I do cold-process soap making, lots of baking, and home renovation. I own a long arm and recently "opened" a business which really hasn't meant a whole lot other than now I can charge my friends for the work they sucker me into doing for them.

Today is Doogie & my 11 year anniversary. Woo. We have 1 son, The Midget, who will be 9 in a few weeks. I get exactly 1 month and 2 days of summer this year between the end of this semester and the beginning of the fall semester.

Cogito 06-29-2013 08:05 PM

Yikes, these close so quickly! I have been whaaaa...I mean waiting it seems like forever to join a RR! Can't believe I missed out. :(

Oksewnsew 06-29-2013 09:26 PM

moonrise 06-30-2013 01:44 AM

There was just one day open for sign-ups?

Nexxus831 06-30-2013 02:02 AM

ACKKKKKKKKKKKK I am super sad this closed so quickly ... would you want to make another group??

Nexxus831 06-30-2013 02:04 AM

Cogito, travelinggramma, Oksewnsew, moonrise and me. Group of 5. What do you think Ssnare???

Wonnie 06-30-2013 04:09 AM

There was, also, paperpieceme, wasn't there?

paperpieceme 06-30-2013 05:13 AM

yup there was me !

TheMamaHauser 06-30-2013 06:08 AM

I support the creation of a 3rd group.

ssnare 06-30-2013 06:15 AM

This is snowballing. I am overwhelmed. This was going to be our small row robin group. I can make another group. I need a leader for each group. Hopefully , I will be able to set groups up with at least one person that has done a round robin before. Lots of people are sending me a pm asking if I can add one more. I am in the process of trying to move.

Right now, I have 16 people who want to participate.

***If someone will help me lead this group, I will open this up for sign ups until July 15 at midnight, CST. Please Do Not Send me any pms until I find a helper.***

I will set up the groups and who you are to send to. The groups will be in groups of 5. The leaders will help answer questions and will send the group the spread sheet with information to their groups. The leaders will send me questions they can't find answers to. We will have a thread for each group. The leaders will be responsible for their group, the thread, etc.

ssnare 06-30-2013 06:21 AM

I will do a 3rd group and possibly more. I need to change the list of who is in which group, due to allergies. So, I will wait to see if someone can help me lead this group and if I have leaders, then, I will assign the groups.

TheMamaHauser 06-30-2013 09:54 AM

I just PM'd you. I'm happy to help/coordinate/whatever you need.

travelinggramma 06-30-2013 10:25 AM

Hi! I am called travelinggramma because for 9 years we were fulltime rv'rs and for three of those years we were raising our two grandchildren. We are currently in a home not on wheels in Prescott Valley AZ.
I can't recall a time I did not have needle and thread in my hands. I loved counted cross stitch and made many an elaborate picture. Alas - age made it too painful to hold the needle and fabric. So about 10 years ago I discovered quilting and really enjoy it. I was in the Boomerang 8 and 9 and had so much fun with everyone's fabric. I finished a round robin wall hanging with another group this past spring and did they ever stretch me. It was very modern and used so many new fabics and colors - but I was so happy with what I contributed to each.
I am looking forward to playing with all your creations!

ssnare 06-30-2013 11:26 AM

Yippee! I have 2 people that are willing to help with this project. Thank you TheMamaHauser and paperpieceme. We can now open this up to whoever wants to do this. There will be groups of 5. Pm TheMamaHauser if you are interested in joining. Signups will be until July 15, 2013 at midnight CST. No exceptions after that!!!
Please pm the following information:
board name:
name:
address:
phone:
email:
allegies, if any, to what:
Do you smoke?:
Do you have pets? What kind?:

Kelly, TheMamaHauser will be contacting you if she does not have all the information she needs. This is a long term commitment. If you feel you can not finish this , please do not sign up.

Elisabrat 06-30-2013 03:50 PM

Yahoo, thanks so much Kelly! and Paperpieceme! I think its really nice that others can participate also. You could consider 6 in a group smaller sized rounds .. just a thought depending on how many sign up I suppose..

I am in another rr with a few in this group ours just starts in July so a head start on that one should be an expert by the time this one starts! (lol). me an expert? yes at being called Brat here but not much else. I do love trying however. I figure 10 maybe 20 more years I might be an intermediate :)
