Winter, Winter/Holidays, Holidays Block Swap!! Sign ups til Oct. 29

Winter, Holiday Sampler Block Swap!

Blocks are to be made in sets of 5, one of which will be returned to you, which will make swapping out sooo much easier for me and makes it so you don’t have to make an extra block for yourself!

You may make up to 6 (six) sets of 5 blocks each for a total of 30 blocks, which can give you enough blocks for a nice sized quilt for the holidays and or winter if you choose! No duplicate sets without prior permission, and sets must be same design, but fabrics may vary.

Block sizes allowed will be anything from 3 1/2 inches unfinished (3” finished) to 15 1/2 inches unfinished(15” finished) and with any combination in between that’s measured in 3 inch increments. *** Please note that if you choose to send in a 3 1/2 inch x 3 1/2 inch block set, you MUST send in 10 blocks to makeup one set and may only send in one set of those to keep things fair to others sending in larger blocks. These will be exchanged 2 for 1. This give you a lot of flexibility in choosing your blocks…for instance, you may have a cute snowman that measures 6 1/2inches x 12 1/2 inches or a tree that measures 9 1/2 inches x 15 1/2 inches. As long as you stick to the 3 inch increment rule and don’t go larger than 15 1/2 inches or smaller than 3 1/2 inches, you’re good!

All skill levels are invited to participate. We do require that you use good 100% sturdy cotton fabrics & appropriate threads that will withstand repeated washings, and your fabrics MUST be pre-washed. ** If you’re using jellyrolls that won’t be pre-washed, please make a note of that on your block labels.

Blocks will be holiday themed with all the wonderful things that we associate with the holidays, or you can choose winter and all the great blocks that can inspire you there! Please keep your backgrounds NEUTRAL. In other words, please do NOT make busy backgrounds…let’s keep these neutral so it’s easier to put the blocks together. Day or night neutral fabrics for backgrounds are also good.

All block styles and methods are encouraged! Machine embroidery, hand embroidery, traditional pieced, paper pieced and both machine and hand appliqué (if you choose to do appliqué, you MUST sew your appliqué down by some method that looks appropriate and please do NOT use monofilament thread to do this). A variety of methods and colors will make for a fun sampler style finished quilt! I also ask that whatever method you choose to make, please do your best work and make something that you would want to have, because you WILL be getting back a block of your own, so use colors and themes that you are proud to send in and will be happy to get back?

Make sure all blocks are labeled with your user name and real name if you wish, and that they have no holes or tears or have too small of seam allowances that would make them unfit to swap, and that they are the size they are supposed to be, in other words, 6 1/2 inch means 6 1/2 inch, not 6 3/8 inches, etc.

Signups will be opened until Oct 29, and blocks must be in my possession by Nov12. Blocks received after that date will be returned to you unswapped. I will swap them out and get them back in the mail to you by the following week. Please pm me to sign up and give me an idea of the number of block sets you will be making and sending in.<o:p></o
<o:p></o
Postagedetails. Please include a self addressedlabel along with stamps or money to cover return postage to you. If you want delivery confirmation, pleaseinclude that as well. I will be mailingthese back in padded priority mailers and the cost is 5.30 for those.

Let’s have fun,and of course you have to follow all the basic rules, found here. http://www.quiltingboard.com/t-20154-1.htm
I know this is a lot of information, but itwill help us to have a really smooth swap! I look forward to seeing what you come up with and please, please, postyour blocks and ideas as you’re making them! Weall love to get inspiration and motivation from each other! I hope some of my paper piecing friends willjoin me as we branch out and include many other methods of sewing our blockstogether and hope to make many more new friends and welcome old friends alike!!

Awesome! Welcome friend!

craft phanatic 09-07-2012 09:32 AM

Been waiting for this! I'm in!

MizMelly 09-07-2012 09:40 AM

Count me in too! I have lots and lots of winter & holiday theme ideas for blocks (funny, I live in the desert where we don't really have winter, but it doesn't stop me from wishing for snow!!).

rwquilts 09-07-2012 11:31 AM

Welcome Robin!
MizMelly, I had to chuckle at your comment! With quilts, we can make any weather we wish, can't we??? :)

marcialee 09-08-2012 08:19 AM

You can put me down

dottie dodge 09-08-2012 03:19 PM

Are these blocks to be made with holiday fabrics using traditional quilt blocks or holiday/winter themed blocks using any fabric that fits the theme of the block?

That's really up to you...the only thing I have specified is that we keep the backgrounds neutral vs busy?

Christmas blocks! Oh, that is what I hope I get! Count me in! I would like a small holiday lap quilt to decorate with, or to snuggle in , even in Florida!

rwquilts 09-09-2012 08:38 AM

Craft and Marcialee how many sets are you thinking of making? I'm just trying to get an idea.

Welcome Cuppy!

rwquilts 09-09-2012 08:42 AM

In case you're wondering...my orignal post got a little mixed up from writing to posting it...it ran words together where there were spaces... oh well, Patrice was able to fix most of them, so hopefully you can read with patience. LOL!

Sure! The only difference for you will be your mailing expenses? I don't know how much it costs to send overseas, but am happy to accomodate you and you just have to possibly mail your blocks a bit earlier to ensure I receive them by the deadline. Would love to have you!

QuilterMomma 09-10-2012 03:50 PM

Peeking in on you. I see Fraew was right in on this swap. Will keep an eye on this. May be able to put these with last years swap and get a nice sized quilt out of them for my bed. have to watch time. I have bookmarked this thread so if I have time, will join in.

Would love to have you join in QuilterMomma, if it works out for you. :)

I have been playing around today and came up with what may be my first block set. This measure 12 1/2". What do you think?

cute tree! :)

Fraew 09-10-2012 07:11 PM

Nice Ronda!

SewExtremeSeams 09-11-2012 02:19 PM

Cute tree Ronda! I can see you're branching out... :D, from pp, that is!

QuilterMomma 09-11-2012 03:14 PM

Oh so good there Linda. I am chuckling awake.

I do agree, that tree is nice. Then when we get it we could add little beads or tiny buttons for ornaments on it. This could work.

Thanks ladies. I'm glad you like them. I agree QuilterMomma about decorating them. That could be fun! I did add some snow to my trees to give them the real cold wintery feel.

TheMamaHauser 09-11-2012 04:45 PM

I am going to sign up, probably for 3 sets.

When we're talking winter theme, stars count, right? It's more the color/tone/print of the fabric?

Sure, stars can count. And with the different size blocks available to use, you can use that aspect when designing what you want to do as well. It's really up to each of you to decide what the theme Winter/Holdays means to you & how you want to carry that out? I will work on a Christmas block set next. :)

craft phanatic 09-13-2012 11:29 AM

Ronda, sorry I haven't responded earlier. I haven't been getting emails when a new post is made. I will be trying to make all 6 sets but maybe 4 sets is a more realistic number. Can I be put down for 4 and change it if I get 6 done? I am definitely going to do some minis this time. I want to have a very random placement of block so I'll need some tiny blocks. BTW, your trees are really cute. Love the snow on top!

Sure you can. I'm just trying to get an estimate, so it's fine if you change the count you actually send in. Thanks regards the trees...I do like them as well.

Welcome Cuppy!

Hi, You can put me down for 2 sets and I will add to it if I can. I seem to want to do everything and they run out of time. Love the trees.

marytoddliz 09-14-2012 05:00 PM

OK I have a question, I think I got it but want to make sure. If I do 6 sets of 5 each all the blocks in each set are alike, but all 6 sets are different? So I can make one set of snowmen, one of raindeer, santa... etc I might use different fabric but pretty much each set would be the same?

If I am correct I would love to do 6 sets, I will be doing 3 sets of Embroidery and 3 sets of applique. I love doing swaps, it keeps me on a schedule and I am amazed how many quilts I get finished.

Thanks Marybeth

craft phanatic 09-14-2012 05:15 PM

Right on Marybeth! The only other stipulation is that if a set measures 3 1/2" square then you must make 10 of those. I just started learning redwork so I am going to do at least two sets of that. I love swaps too! I don't have an embroidery machine so I love when people send in those kind of blocks. And everybody has different creative ideas so the quilts are always so interesting!

marytoddliz 09-14-2012 06:59 PM

Cool, thanks I don't like doing the 3.5, they are to easy to lose in my messy messy sewing room! I told hubby I think I left the window open and a tornado must have hit! He just does not believe me!

I think most of my sets will be 6.6 and 9.5 I have been getting some really cool embroidery patterns, and my thread got here last week, I am keeping both machines going! All my sets will be pretty much Christmasy. I will send a pm to Rhonda to let her know I am in!

Welcome Marybeth! I got your pm and you are on the list! (and not the naughty or nice list either, LOL). I am assuming that when you said 6.6, you meant 6.5"? It will be fun to see what you come up with!

Thank you Craft for explaining and answering Marybeth's questions. I love you guys! You're awesome!!!

marytoddliz 09-15-2012 10:11 AM

oops, yep that was a typo!

snownannie 09-15-2012 10:50 AM

Count me in. I am pming you after this.
Snownannie

rwquilts 09-15-2012 11:28 AM

Welcome snownannie! May I assume by your user name and where you live that your name is more figurative than literal? LOL!

Okay ladies, just to keep this fun and encourage you gals to not only get started on these blocks, but also give a little added incentive...
I'm going to give a small giftie to the first 3 people (besides me) who make and post a set of blocks for this swap...keeping in mind quality over quantiy always? :) Beside, you'll be getting one back, so...don't be in such a hurry to finish as to sacrifice quality, but we're not quilt police either...LOL! Only one prize for the first 3 people, NOT sets of blocks. I know it's more usual that participants may send little hostess goodies, but heh! I want to share too and it's ridiculous to send to myself! You will have to wait to get your gifties til I swap your blocks back however. I'm ready to mark names down. Anyone???? :):):)

marytoddliz 09-15-2012 01:46 PM

OH, how fun a contest! I have three more snowmen to make!
