Default Round Robin July to December 2016 (deadline for sign-up July 30, 2016)

Who wants to do a Round Robin?

Shall we do five people per group?

We just need to share the list of people with each other, then each agree to mail to the next person on the list (it will be the same person each time). If you join, then accept the possibility that you may be mailing an international package, with the time and cost consideration involved with that.

I suggest that we start with a 12" block, and then add 6" borders. We will plan to end up with a quilt top 60" or larger. We will mail at the end of the month. The last border will take more sewing, so we will mail after two months on that one. So, with five people, it's a six month commitment. If we can get the first block out yet this month, it could mean we would have our quilt top near Christmas time!

I have asked PatriceJ about doing a Round Robin, and she gives the idea a thumbs-up. We need to remember to review the general rules regarding swaps and abide by them. http://www.quiltingboard.com/member-...-a-t20154.html

Basically, we will simply add to the quilt top that we receive in the mail, letting the colors and design of it ‘speak’ to us in order to decide what to add. Each person can add a border as complicated as an intricate paper pieced pattern, or as repetitive as tons of 2” pinwheels, or as simple as a single 6” strip of fabric. We want to welcome all skill levels.

The owner of the center block can send fabric along with their block if they would like it added along the way (a yard, more or less, as desired), but must accept that it’s up to each of the other people in the group if they will use the fabric or not. Sending nothing along with the center block is fine.

Pattern: The owner of the center block can say if they prefer all piecing for their quilt top, or if they will also accept appliqué.

Fabric: Specific likes and dislikes of types of fabric prints should be suggested with caution. For example, don’t require the use of only 30’s reproduction, or only modern prints, or only civil war. There is a place for swaps of a coordinated nature, but this Round Robin will tend toward a more ‘scrappy’ look. Remember, Quilting Board general rules exclude requiring a ‘high-end’ source. A specific type of fabric might not be in someone’s budget to buy, or might not be available when someone is trying to use only their stash. We want to welcome everyone.

Color: Specific color suggestions should not be something like ‘monochromatic’ in case someone will struggle to comply with that request. However (if you have enough quilts in your life that are done in pink and purple, or you hate black), you can, within reason, make color suggestions-- keeping in mind to let your suggestions to allow other people’s creativity rather than embrace your need for a certain look.

Conclusion: Limit the instructions you send with your center block, and give yourself the chance to be pleasantly surprised by what another chooses to put in your quilt top.

Pictures should be posted during the month to show your progress, and pictures posted at the end of the month to show your completed border attached! Pictures will enable us to contemplate ahead of time what our addition will be for each quilt top—no need to have the top in hand in order to begin to determine what pattern or fabric to add to it. And fun with pictures is required! Won’t it be nice to see each person’s quilt top growing?

Please private message me your real name and physical address in order to join the Round Robin. The order in which I receive your names will be the order of mailing. I will give your name and address to the next person in the list. (The first person signing up with an address outside the US will be who I will mail to, in case that will help others in the States who prefer not to mail internationally.) If more than five people want to join, then the size of the border will be decreased, if more than ten, then another group will be included in the fun. Between five and ten people will mean smaller borders, ten or more people will mean two groups, etc. After the deadline of the sign up period, we will know for sure about that. We will aim for sewing a quilt top between 60” to 80.” There is no limit for participants. In fact, the more the merrier!

Let’s plan to get the first block in the mail in July or, at the latest, the first week of August-- so decide quickly if you’re in or out!

And what are you waiting for? Don’t you already have an orphan block laying around, just waiting to be your Round Robin center?

Deadline to private message me = July 30.

Will the top fit in the flat rate $6.80 usps envelope as it grows? And is this a total of 5 mailings or 6 (I'm confusing myself trying to figure it out, lol)

Don't you think more people will join if it continues through to Jan. or February? I think a December deadline makes this one tricky. Any chance of extending it?

I'm a little confused too? You're only giving 2 weeks from now to have the theme block made. That would be one shipment. Then Aug., Sept. Oct. Nov. to add a row and then Dec. to make the borders? Or We each make a row & then add a border at the ends of it? So how many blocks do we add for each row?

I would suggest that perhaps Jan or Feb might be a better ending. Allowing for 6 to 8 weeks (including the time for mailing) might make it easier to think, plan and make a border that will enhance and add to the central design.

Nov and Dec are so full of making gifts and having company that not much "extra" quilting gets done.

Sending along a journal with the RR for ideas and thoughts each person has while working will add a lot of lasting interest.

Yes, I would like to be in

Kassaundra, It depends how many people sign up for how many times the quilt top will be mailed. I assume as the top gets bigger, it will no longer fit into a flat rate envelope. A flat rate box might be needed.

Muse & Sew, It's not a Row Robin. There will be no rows. It's a Round Robin only. That means it will look like a medallion quilt at the end. There is a center, then borders that go around the center on all four sides. The owner of the top is the maker of the center. There is not a theme needed, really. You could suggest one in your note you send with your center, but you must accept that the other participants will add a border of their choice that they think looks good attached to the growing top.

Mim, It's my thought that people will periodically check on updates in the thread, and all will post pictures along the way, so that it won't be necessary to completely think and plan the border after receiving the quilt top. Even the execution of the border can be started before actually receiving the top. For example, when you see someone's colors you might think of a complementary color to use. Or, when you see the fabric prints being used, you might think of something you will like to put with them. Or, when you see that a border is very busy, with lots of little pieces, you might think you will add something with less sewing to rest the eyes, like only three 2" strips. Pictures throughout the month can give us ideas of what we would like to add when it comes our turn. A journal is a lovely idea.

If there are more people than 5 in the group, then there will be more months to complete the top. There will be only one border added each month. The end timeframe is only a suggestion supposing there are five people in the group-- the end of the Robin is actually dependent on how many people sign up. There will be one Round per month.

Sorry for the confusion! It's my first time doing a Round Robin, and my first time posting a thread in the Swap Forum. :-) Please bear with me. :-)

I've had a nap and think I've figured out the mailing it will be one plus the number participating.

Another question is the round width set in stone (based on number of participants) or is it a minimum and could be made bigger? I was looking at the pictures posted by Mim and the variety of widths was visually appealing.
