"Turning Over a New Leaf #2" OBW with octagons
#92
I think I prefer how the hexagons nest together and you lose the seams that join them. However, I do like the octagons too, but don't care for how they line up in a row. But then again, I do like those little squares in between those octogans. I guess it's a 50/50 race. Both are beautiful - Congrats on them both!

I like them both, though the 'blocky' effect bothers me, too. Upon examining the octagon quilt a bit more, I think I have a suggestion for making it a bit less blocky. The CORNERS make a difference: the ones with a prominent star draw the eye to the horizontal and vertical lines between the blocks; the 'blurry' corners merge the blocks more - like the hexagon quilts.
Edit: the octagons with light colors on the edges also draw the eye to the horizontal and vertical borders. I don't know what you can do about this, because I haven't made a OBW yet.

Joanne thanks so much for that - it's really helpful. And you're absolutely right on both counts. I can't do much about the light colours on the edges - these blocks only can be made one way unlike the hexes that you can turn 3 ways. But I CAN and will pay more attention to the setting corners next time. :-D
Edited to say - perhaps on the layout, if the light edge ones butt up to each other, that will help too.
