I am no help. They are both attractive. It does seem to me, though, that the octagonal quilt has more angles within each section. As I pondered the difference, I noticed that for whatever reason, the angles of the flowers/leaves, whatever they are, were more pronounced. There was a white one with a red diagonal that went across each piece ... I couldn't find anything like that in the hexagons, so I have to conclude that the accentuated angles are created because of the increased number of seams and pieces. <wave>

I'm just working on Block Bender grids - did you see that post on here? I love the way math is being translated into visual pattern. I even tried a grid with the Fibonacci sequence - you know 1,1,2,3,5,8 etc, where each number is the sum of the two preceding ones? I'd read something about it in a Ricky Tims book as applied to the Convergence technique so thought I'd try it with the Block Benders.

I like being arty-creative and chucking stuff about willy-nilly, like on my art quilts but I also LOVE structure, order and pattern. Thought I was weird, glad I'm not, or at least, I'm in good company!

You're always a help Omak! And you're right as well - the extra two segments create a more complex kaleidoscope but also, they add seam lines. I WILL try another octagon with varying size blocks but I think I'll continue to make more hexes - as least for OBW layouts. If I'm doing stack n whack (with sashing  ) I like the octagon effect, such as on the table runner I made with the leftovers of this. :-D

Lovely! I like your idea of corner accents. Remarkable!

Oh wow, just saw this. How very cool to see the comparison. I'm surprised to see I like both. I'm a real fan of the movement and liveliness that comes with hexagons, but the octagons are amazing, too, such richness and stateliness!

For me the "losing part of the blocks" really enhances the dynamic nature of the hexes (and conversely, emphasises the calmness of the octagons - both very cool).
