Here's a diagram of what I was trying to do:

The parellelogram and triangle units were to make a V shape and they would have an effect of floating above the background of the quilt.

But instead, the units just make a longer four sided unit!

Wow! That could be a beautiful table runner. I recently made a major cutting error when trying to follow a pattern. I cut them all on a right angle, instead of putting the pieces right sides together: then they would have been correct. Anyway, I created something totally different but it is a beautiful table topper instead. I'll post a photo of it as soon as I get the binding on it. I actuall like it better than what I was trying to make in the first place. You know we can never waste a scrap of fabric. Just turn it into something else. You're on the right track.
