Great quilt and what a good pattern to use up available fabric. Will try it with kids fabric for the needy.

Someone asked for my pattern and for this quilt, I determined the sizes I wanted and made my own pattern so here are the instructions from my notes on this quilt! I thought others may be interested also in making it, so here's the mini tut:

Old Maid's Puzzle Mini Tut:

Finished block size: 7" (7.5" unfinished)
Quilt size: 49x63 (7 rows by 9)

Cut (2) 2.5" dark sqs.
Cut (2) 2.5" light sqs.

Cut (4) 2.25" sqs. of either light or dark depending on which block you're doing. (dark backgrounds go on the light sqs. and light backgrounds go on the dark sqs. so you would cut either 4 light sqs. or 4 dark sqs.)

*Draw a line diagonally down the back of the 2 light sqs. placing them face down on the dark sqs. and sew 1/4" away from the line on both sides, cut the blocks apart on the drawn line;* square them up to 2.25"; sew the hst to a 2.25" square; repeat for the other 3 sqs.; join the 2 halves; square the block up to 4".

Cut (1) dark 4.5" square
Cut (1) light 4.5" square

Repeat from * to * and square the block to 4".

Sew the lg. HST to the small HST block and repeat for the bottom half; join the 2 halves. Your block will be 7.5".

Next cut (2) 8" sqs. for your alternate block and repeat from * to * and square up to 7.5".

Place the blocks on the design wall in a diagonal fashion with all lt. background blocks in the same diagonal rows and all dark background blocks in the same diagonal rows. All alternate blocks should face the same direction diagonally.

Horizontally, your blocks will alternate dark blocks with light blocks.

This is an easy quilt for someone who has trouble selecting colors as you only need a dark color to alternate with a light color. Any shades will work, high contrast or low contrast! Have fun with your fabrics and colors!

Fabrics that appear to be small scale or near solids work best for impact of color in this quilt. Be sure to have some real high contrast blocks for best results! Thanks for loving my quilt and trying this pattern from the 30's! n2

P.S. The secret to my nice points was my seam ripper! You'll need it like I did!

Great scrappy quilt and I like the addition of HST to add to the direction of the blocks. Nice job and thanks for sharing.
