Hi all, I am new to the forum, and not an experienced quilter.

I recently had a difficult hip surgery and my Physical therapist (and his wife to be!) have been extremely helpful to me. (I am a long distance runner, so it was a big big deal...)

I want to make this quilt for them as a wedding gift (October-so I have time to make errors and fix them!). They are cyclists and I think the circle pattern resembles bike wheels, but it stylistic enough to just look nice.

I found this photo on the net but with no info about it. I am hoping someone knows the name of the pattern or has a good idea about how to find the pattern....

I don't think I've ever seen this pattern. I hope you out the name. It will make a beautiful quilt.

I will look for the pattern for you, but beware, this is not for an inexperienced seamstress. Not a beginner quilt..But I would be happy to help you along if you really want to do it.

Never saw this pattern before. It's sure to be applique, because piecing that would be difficult.

Looks like a wagon wheel to me. Thy Marcha Hohn's free block site. She has hundreds of blocks and it is all free. This would be a good pattern for someone recuperating. IMHO

It actually looks "old." Maybe it was an image from one of the quilts at the R&W show in March. I'll see if I can find it on the cd.

But it would be relatively easy to reproduce. It's only made of two blocks. The Wagon (or Bicycle) Wheels and the Flying Geese.

The Prairie Points would be optional. :mrgreen: :mrgreen:

And it could be done with modern techniques - fusing, machine applique, etc.

Take a red circle and fuse the white parts to it. One finished wagon wheel block. Done. :mrgreen:

Obviously, I'm simplifying it, but it doesn't have to be a chore.

Thanks for the offer of help! I really really want to do this. I actually want to change it a tiny bit, using green background and then doing the wheels in two shades of dark blue, and then instead of triangles, turning then around to make diamonds (we use the diamond in our town to signify the bike lane.)

It is such a nice, clean pattern. I was trying to avoid too much "flowery" stuff as it is primarily for a man...

I think, let me know if I am wrong...that getting those circles to look all the same and actually ON the quilt will be the hardest part. yes?

Not really. Depends. Like I said, you're looking to make a really cool contemporary quilt for your friend, not a heirloom quilt with perfect applique that's going to hang in a museum. Doesn't mean it won't last as long.

Have you ever done machine applique before? Do you like hand applique? Ever work with fusibles? Any paper-piecing?What method are YOU comfortable with.

There are many, many different ways to do these blocks.
Once you figure out the plan, the sewing is pretty repetitive.

You've already figured out your desired color scheme. That's usually half the battle.

Just a note: if you reverse the triangles, you get a square on point in a square. Do you want that shape or are you looking for a 45 degree (or 60) diamond shape instead? They wouldn't be any more work.
