That is a charming story. It makes the quilt all the more special. The colors are beautiful.

Is a "charm quilt" always put together that way - with only 2 pieces being the same?

Wow those are great!! I love the way your placing the blocks in color palettes...can't wait to see a pic of them completed! If we find the twin do we get to share in the charm? :D

There are different versions or legends about charm quilts. Some just say you should have 1000 pieces of fabric. Others say the 1000 pieces should be all different.

My friend in Quebec who will be 100 in October told me that her grandmother called this type of quilt a "courting quilt". Young girls would start their courting quilt at a young age collecting fabric from different sources as they went. They didn't put near 1000 pieces in their quilts but enough to make it challenging for their suitors.

Another legend has it that mothers would make charm quilts to keep their sick children amused while bed-bound. "Find the two pieces that are alike."

I sorted and planned this quilt in 2006. When I got it out recently to work on it I couldn't remember which two pieces were identical. I spent almost a week of evenings going through the blocks finding the two! I was really panicky for awhile until I found them!

Love all your colors. You must have traingles down perfectly now.

Those are great! I'd have to keep a safety pin in the twin until I got it finished or I'd keep hunting for it over and over cuz I'd forget where it was! I love the fact that it's carrying on a tradition.

Wow, Mamagus...your charm blocks are gorgeous. It looks like the actual block "units" are a bigger size which I love. I've not wanted to do a charm quilt because it seemed to require using teeny, tiny squares that drive me a little nuts! Good job. Can[t wait to see you finished piece.
