Sue, you are right - the quilt does not have a binding. I always close my quilts in the traditional way quilters from Wales and Northern England did it: with the knife edge. When the quilting is finished I cut all three layers back to the same length (1 inch apart from the outermost quilting line). Next I shorten the batting 1/2 inch. The "seam allowance" of the backing is now folded around the edge of the batting, the top fabric is also folded to the inside. Than I sew a line of simple running stitches to close the edges. Very simple - but effective. It fits perfectly to that kind of quilts and it's the traditional "British" way of closing them.
