Pat, this pattern is so easy peasy!! I had a stack of 3.5" squares that I used up, plus a LOT of my scraps. Just make a simple 9 patch....you can do any size you want. I am now making one with 4.5" squares. I always placed a white square in the center spot. (The one I'm making now has a "brown" center square every time.) I just liked the idea of the scrappiness being broken up by the whites. After you've sew your 9 patch together, cut it across in the center, both vertically and horizontally. You will now have 4 smaller squares. I did a big stack of these before sewing any back together. This way, you can really mix the 4 smaller squares up. Anyway, take 4 smaller squares and sew them back together. You can place them any way you want. But I always tried (missed a couple of times) to place my now little white squares, with one in upper left corner, one in lower right corner, and two sitting diagonally from each other in the new center. If you go to U-Tube and type in the search box, D9P tutorial, there is a good tute from Missouri Quilt company with Jenny. When shows you how to put the 4 squares back together and not have two seams butting each other. But, if you follow my instructions about where to place the 4 small white squares, this is how it will work out to not have two seams butting each other in the newly arranged square. This is probably as clear as mud. Hard to explain with typing!! Hope this helps.
