I like the red border, and I would use the car fabric next to it. I would also use the car fabric on the back. JMHO

Yeah, use the cars for the back. Think about it -when he's pulling the quilt up to his chin, what will he see -cars!

Your grandson will love it no matter what you do with it. I'm sure he knows nothing about something being too "busy."

I agree with Neesie. A wide border (4 " or more, maybe?) of the orange and then a wider border of the cars print. It's going to be an adorable quilt! He'll love it!

I would also use car fabric on the back and then could be reversible. Beautiful quilt.

I think this is the best idea so far - the red adds a whole lot to the quilt that the orange didn't. But please don't put the cars on the back. Put top and bottom of the star.

I think that your quilt measurements may be off. An X-long twin bed is 39" x 80". The recommend size for that bed is 68" x 94", allowing for a 15" drop on the sides and bottom. That does not take into account a pillow tuck. I'm making a twin sized quilt using a Disney Princess panel (34 3/4" x 39 3/4") for DGD and it's going to be 68 1/2" x 94 1/2". I planned it so that the panel is centered when it is on the bed w/pillow. Just a thought.

I like the orange, then blue fabric for borders, and I might use the car fabric for the back, making it very reversible.
