I made these squares in a class at the LQS. I wasn't, and still am not, crazy about the pattern. I took the class with the hopes of gaining skills. I originally did it with purples and greens/blues. Don't like them mixed together at all, so I took the purples out and will probably do something with them separately. This is what I am left with. I want to at least make a lap size quilt.

How would you go about filling the blank squares? Solid color or a pieced block? I was thinking if I did a solid-ish color, I could practice a large FMQ in a medalian or heart with feathers. My DD (who will be getting this quilt) says the colors remind her of the beach. Was also thinking beach type appliques in the missing blocks.

I would love some advice from my fellow QB members :)

I would also put big blocks in the empty spaces, and big borders. That way you have plenty of space to practice. It would look so neat with a feathered wreath!

Oh my .. I love that.. you've done a wonderful job! I would try a couple of different things. Bundle up your blocks and head to LQS that has a nice selection of batiks. I would try them out with fabric that is either a "sand" colored batik...
or one that is that palest blue that I see in at least 2 different fabrics there. I have even seen the sand color with fishes or seashells in the batik.. just audition a couple and see what goes best before you buy.. I think it's going to be lovely! Then I would call it "Sand, sea and sky"

Do you just have the six blocks?
Take all your blocks, including the purple ones that you think you don't like .... to your LQS and audition fabrics.

I think you could find a nice print that would have all the colours, and tie them together. Also, watch for a multi-coloured narrowish stripe that would blend. And perhaps another solid plain, black? Then use them to sash and/or for the blocks between.

If you have enough, I probably wouldn't use the layout as you have it, but rather stagger them, with the sashing between.

Love the setting and the blocks. Stick with the batiks, maybe a sand for the blanks and then see how the ones you left out will blend so you can put them back in to make it large enough. It should be about 50" x 70" finished. Then put a 4" or 5" border of the same color around it so the blocks "float". then you can add a darker border to finish it off. You will need 25 or 32 blocks. Depending on how much fabric you have. Good luck, its going to be beautiful.

I'm with those suggesting the layout just as you have it with squares and set in triangles and borders. Simple is always best. The colors are soooooooo pretty

Well, if the colors remind you DD of the beach why not do some beachy quilting in the solid blocks? Seashell, seahorse, sea stuff and beach stuff. Just a thought.
