I do not think it is girly and neither does my DH. But I think you are wise to send a picture to his mom before sending it to her. You never know what taste (or lack of taste) he may have. Good luck and thanks for sharing.

Maybe some guys think "quilts" are pretty much for girls.

Having said this I made my son a real male "fantasy" quilt (which he loves... better than the rail fence back) with dragons and dwarfs and wizards and griffins (?) and all sorts of weird things and his wife-in-one-month is crazy about it! Go figure....
