I'm betting the person just left appliqueing all those tiny little pieces for last and just couldn't face doing it.

    Interesting reading article: http://barbarabrackman.blogspot.ca/2...ue-wrecks.html

After reading the posts I clicked on the link to the sunbonnet sue history & my AVG said there was a virus on the sunbonnet sue pages, so don't go there unless your anti virus is up-to-date! It may just be my computer.

OOPS! Thanks, Dayle. I meant handless. My fingers are going faster than my brain, I guess.

What a fantastic find. I don't know the history of Sunbonnet Sue, but I do know she's been around for a long, long time, possibly Depression era. Enjoy your treasure and thanks for sharing.

It's a beautiful quilt, I like the double hand stitching instead of a sash, great idea, I may try that on my Baltimore album quilt if I ever finish it. As for the handless Sues maybe the quilter did not wanted to bother with tiny pieces for the hands! LOL

About the lack of sashing: the applique was done on long strips of white fabric instead of being done on square/rectangular blocks. Therefore, the only seams are long vertical ones to attach the rows. I think the black accent stitching nicely separates the Sue's. It is not quilting, but only goes through the top layer.

I would think that it is up to the quilter as to whether they want to fiddle with the tiny hands or not. I've made them both ways. Sunbonnet is one of my favorites! ♥♥♥
