The mesh is called pet screen and the big box hardward stores have it in basic colors. Maybe an internet search will let you know where you can get lots of other colors. A LQS here in the OC carries it in lots of colors and it's great for making beach bags.

someone in my quilt guild made a bag for another member and it had a mesh bottom so the sand would fall through the bottom.
