This quilt was an experiment in reverse applique. I put the orange for the butterflies down first, then I put black over the top. I appliqued around the outside of the black, capturing the orange inside. Then I cut slits and opened up the wings. I know it's hard to see, but the white spots are seed beads that I added after the quilt was finished. The little things in the middle are the cocoons. I call this quilt "Metamorphosis".

This is a very beautiful quilt. The colors are vibrant and make the butterflies appear like they could fly off the cloth. Great workmanship. Thank you for sharing.

That is absolutely gorgeous. How in the world did you do that ? I have never done reverse applique - did you follow a pattern or is this your own design ? Can you recommend a tutorial on the tecnique ?

This is beautiful and I can visualise the beads... I love beading on quilts, just a little adds so much. And the name is great - I'm working on a Metamorphosis of my own at the moment in a One Block Wonder!

Normally I am not "into" butterfly quilts, but this is AWESOME! The seed beads make them look so real, and the cocoons are really cool. Your creativity amazes me!!

Stunning quilt! I love monarchs...they come through here on their migration and just cover the trees.
