No hammer needed on upper right one. Just back off on stitching the last 1/4 inch, or about two to three stitches. The underside will swirl naturally and no hammer is needed. I do it all the time with my six inch blocks and free four inch blocks from Quilting on the Square newsletter. The newsletter is free when you sign up for it.
Laura Aaron Hird has four quilting books out: Farmer's Wife Sampler Quilt, Farmer' s Wife Pony Club Quilts, Farmer's Wife 1930s Sampler and the latest is the Bible Sampler I am now working on. All but one has the six inch finished blocks. All come with CDs that has the patterns for paper piecing and templates. She 'renames' her blocks, you may be knowledgeable about a number of them.
Love the blocks you showed here....hope we can see the total quilt when it is done.

You won't see whole quilt and either will I - well maybe a picture. As I said I do these for a group in Canada as orphan blocks and they make them up into quilts. I do know about all those samplers but prefer to just pick and choose blocks I like. I've done the Jane Stickle quilt, the Splendid Sampler and others. But I just wanted to do blocks I like.
I do know about swirling but with 8 or more layers, a tap with my ever handy, free hammer is all that is needed. Thanks for your comments!
