No, we didn't want to get the kits. She didn't like orange at the time (she was 5 when we started this) so we went to Joann's and bought the colors she likes. I cut them into strips with the rotary cutter and with a ruler, pencil and scissors, she cut the strips into squares and then cut the fringe. With the tiny squares left over from cutting the corners of the fringe, we made a pillow case.

Very pretty. She has already started putting colors in a pleasing arrangement. She's on her way to some wonderful quilt design.
