Gal - Your quilt is just perfect for a little guy. I can't believe how wonderful you did with fabrics from the Op shops! That is the true heart of quilting, use it up, wear it out. Our ancestors used what they had and truly recycled. I know how expensive fabric is in NZ after my visit last year, but had no ideal batting was so expensive also (though it makes sense that it would be similar to fabric). I recently found a gently used blanket at a thrift store (op shop) and plan to wash and dry with hot water and then use as batting. It feels about the same weight. I am also going to try some used flannel sheets when I make practice quilts on my juki and frame. Maybe you could get those more reasonably than batting?

Let us know how Riley likes his quilt (love that you embroidered his name and personalized it for him).

Nursie76, thanks, yes I agree it really appeals to me, about the 'make do' tradition of quilt making, that is the challenge for me also, as I do not have a lot to spend on fabrics. It means that I must wait a little longer till all the fabrics come together, but that is part of the fun, and certainly the challenge! You won't believe this but last visit to the op shop I actually picked up a couple of flannelette sheets in great condition for $1 each, with the idea I could use them instead of batting, but when I got them home, my Mum liked them so much I gave them to her as the colour was perfect for her single bed!
So the hunt goes on!!

Wow! I can see where flannel sheets might be cheaper. So sweet of you to give your mum the ones you found. Great price by the way. I just bought one for $3 the other day. My DD is going to grad school at the Uni of Auckland and is currently home for a month. She would like me to teach her to sew so she can save money on clothes as they are also expensive in NZ she says. She shops mostly at OP shops. I tried to tell her that at the price of fabric in NZ, she probably wouldn't save anything...course I suppose I could send her some once in a while. ;-)

How wonderful Nursie, your daughter is in NZ, she will love it here, my niece is a lawyer in Auckland! She loves it!
My daughter graduated last year, (Arts) and loves to dress as an 'artist' her favourite place to shop is the op shops, it was not always so though, she hated it when she was a teenager! Funny how going out to work and buying a home of her own has galvanized her shopping into saving money every which way she can!* Lol!

You are right, although DD never objected to much to yard sale stuff, she was still rather high maintenance when younger. She is 27 and been married for 4 years and it is amazing how she has learned to stretch her dollar...U.S, or Kiwi.:wink:
