I thought about a strip in between but I think that would be a cop out after getting this far. It will be 6 foot square once done. it takes 4 strips for one foot of width.

And I have a thought - I won't even call it a suggestion because I know you've pretty much decided not to go with strips between.
I don't know that black is the right color. It's what I thought would work at first for strips, but it looks kind of plain. I would try turquoise. I have decided that turquoise is the magic color for accenting scrap quilts (see the quilt in my avatar). And of course, it goes back to Point #2 of my color theory: Color is good.
But that may be just my crazy opinion.
