picking material

I look at posts of quilts that others have made, and what amazes me the most are the color combinations. I love the scrappy looks. I have such a hard time coming up with colors and matching them. What is the knack to this? I stand for hours looking at fabric just trying to figure what will go with what. This should be the best part. Any suggestions???

There will be a different answer for every quilter. I make scrappy quilts. Sometimes I'll limit the number of colors and then sprinkle in some spark, like spice to brighten it.
I think it's okay to copy color ideas. If you see something you like that can be a starting point.

There are also fabric lines that are meant to be mixed and matched, too
Sometimes I even grab a LQS worker to help me shop LOL there is one guy who has very similar tastes as mine, and he knows right where all of the "good" stuff is 8) :D 8)

I wanted a scrappy look for my bow tie quilt, but have no scraps and questionable ability to pick fabric so I cheated. I used charm squares. Everything looked nice together with no thought on my part.

Sometime when I cant find just the right color combinations, they have to jump out at me and when they dont I look for kits with the colors I like already in them so the choosing part is already done for me. Just a thought.... Hope this helps!!!

Another way is to look on the side of the fabric at the color chart and get fabric that compliments a focal piece. Also, you could use a color wheel, but I'd rather take my chances and run with it. As for scrappy, I'm terrible at the 'real" scrappy, mine take forever since I need to plan.
New Years Resolution, but up fabric, put in brown sack and make a quilt--it'll be what it'll be. :) :)

A lot of times I pick a "central" fabric for a sampler.. which is my favorite kind of quilt, then I use it to help me locate co-ordinating pieces to compliment it.
I do the same with my stash at home..lol

I have same problem and it's very frustrating because choosing fabric should be a fun part of the quilting process.
After spending about an hour in a quilt shop last trying to choose fabric that I could add to my stash I was emabarrassed because the ladies would occasionally ask me if I needed help. They were very nice and I didn't fee
