Hi all,
I am almost done with a quilt for my guild's upcoming show, and I am so happy with the way it is turning out! I have a bit of a dilemma, though, and I was wondering if you had any thoughts. Below is a photo of my quilt in its current state (it measures about 70 inches by 70 inches). Do I stop adding borders and keep it as is, or should I add one more border? I was planning on adding a dark blue pieced border as the final one, but I like how the yellow border makes the quilt look so "sparkly." I am tempted to keep it as is and just add a red binding for a touch of color at the edge. I am worried that a dark blue border may make it too somber, but it might tie everything together. I'd love to hear any thoughts or advice! Thanks! --Nicole |
This is just gorgeous as is.

My vote is no more border, I think the red binding will finish it perfectly!!!
I agree, It's perfect now! A red binding would really finish it nicely

No border. It's perfect the way it is. I agree, a red binding would finish it.

What a fabulous use of Kaffe fabrics!
You're the one who mentioned "sparkly" - so..... Personally, I would add the darker pieced border. And here's why - The quilt is great as it is, but look how the light border just disappears, even against the wall. It fades out. The darker border will frame the whole quilt, and then the lights will REALLY sparkle. |
Agree with all the others. I would just bind it in red! It is gorgeous!

Beautiful quilt!
I would add a small dark blue or red border and then use that same color as the binding. Reason being - it will make it stand out more as mentioned above it sort of fades out against a wall. Also because a border will hold all your end seams together for when you quilt it, or have it quilted. If you don't put a border on it make sure all your end seams on the piano key pieces are secure before you quilt it. You can do this by running a seam along the edge about a 1/4" inch in from the edge when not using a border. Have fun and have a Merry Christmas! |

I agree; keep it as is.

I would add the red bining and call it finished. It is beautiful, great work.

I've always wanted to do a star quilt...perhaps next year. This one is absolutely gorgeous! I would think that a dark blue at the edge would kind of restrict the expansion of the colors, while the yellow at the edge leads the eye to keep going, if that makes any sense. The red binding would add that little zip without "containing" the design. Gorgeous work!

Listen to your instincts. It sounds like they are telling you that you like it as it is. I like it as it is, too.
I would just bind it. That will serve as your last border, so I would pick my binding fabric carefully. I love the quilt.
Looks great the way it is, but, a red type binding would tie the center to the edge. Just my opinion, but that's what I see. Lovely work!
Looks wonderful just the way it is!
A red binding would finish it off nicely! |
If you have enough of that dark blue used in the first border around the main motif, I would use that. I really think you need something dark to highlight the yellow, but don't think you need another pieced border. The quilt is gorgeous!!!!
Perfect...Just bind it....Very precise piecing. Your work is beautiful.
I think that the red binding will be enough to "stop" your eye at the edge. Very pretty!!
The dark blue would frame the quilt and make it pop. It is beautiful. Also, when pulling up a quilt or covering yourself with it the last border is where the oils from your hands collects. A darker border means not having to wash the quilt so often.
You need something dark on the outside in my opinion but a dark blue or red binding would be sufficient I think
I think I like it as is. Are you talking red for binding like the border in the quilt? That would be very pretty.
I think the blue border would act as a frame and let the eye have a place to rest. You have made a beautiful, festive piece of art. I like the idea of blue border with a red binding.
Wow! Absolutely gorgeous!!! I would not add another border. I think red binding will finish it up wonderfully. Good job!
No more pieced borders. It needs a stopper. It is so perfect as it is. A blender or solid border, then the matching binding will be a nic e finish.
My vote is to add another red border and bind it in blue. Going dark on the edges always seems to pop out the center, which is what you want to do. It's kinda like framing a picture.
You made a wonderful piece, shows all patterns, all colors, and all tastes will find something lovely touchy there
I will not advice any more leave it to professionals I love it as it is  |
I love it the way you have it.
I agree with the majority opinion. The red binding will look like a picture frame and perfectly finish it off.

Beautiful...as many have already said, the red binding would be fabulous. Nice job, be sure to post pic when all done. Thank you for sharing.

I have always liked having the end/last border be in the darker colors to make everything in the middle pop. But that is just my preference. Your quilt is very pretty as is, but I personally think the dark would just finish it nicely.

I agree on just doing a red binding. That is one incredible quilt top! Great job!

Beautiful colorful quilt.
Beautiful quilt. I would just add the red binding to finish it. It's a winner in your Guild Show for sure.
Perfect as it is.
I like it just the way it is
I think that you need a dark border to pull it together. The yellow just fades away.
