What patience. The color is so nice and your hand quilting is incredble.

You and the quilt are amazing. I can't imagine the patience and dedication it takes to accomplish something like this. I always look forward to seeing your work. Thanks for sharing.

WOW!!!! That is stunning.

Fabulous!! I would love to be able to hand quilt but I came to quilting too late and my hands won't allow it. First suffered arthritis at 18 years old. Didn't have much trouble when we moved back to the Sunshine state in 1988. A couple of years ago it came back with a vengeance .

Grandma58 01-26-2012 10:48 PM

Beautiful and it makes me long for a hand quilting day!

This is a solid made by P&B. Unfortunately these fabrics are not longer available here in Germany, but I still have enough in different colors for a few years!

Beautiful! What is meant by "needlemarked"

mymsmess 01-27-2012 05:19 AM

Wow the effort and work you have put in this!

wandatn 01-27-2012 06:01 AM

That is beautiful-I got me a kingsize wholecloth-I haven't started on it yet-I am going to try to handquilt it myself-do you have any suggestions on getting started? I am going to put it on my quilting frame-that way when the grandkids come I can lock my sewing room door.LOL I am really excited about getting started on it-I figure sooner or later we will get winter here in Kingsport and I will have something to do. How long does one take you to handstitch? What kind of thread and needle do you use and how much thread-I know its alot.

Shirlrh 01-27-2012 06:42 AM

You can see it here:

Needlemarking is a very traditional method of marking the patterns without pencils, chalk or other things. I found a description in a British book of 1954, tried it and it worked perfect for me!

Well, I think the best suggestion I can give you is: just start with it and give it a try! Furthermore I always look for battings that are easy to handquilt. Of course this is a matter of personal choice and every quilter has his/her own preferences. You can find many threads here on the board regarding battings.

In general I need 3-4 months (6-8 hours per day) to hand quilt a wholecloth like the one on the pictures. It depends a lot of the patterns you use, the more intricate they are, the more time and thread you need. For this quilt I needed about 1000 yards of YLI hand quilting thread, this is one of my favourites. I use John James Betweens #11 for hand quilting.

As long as you are interested I will! Your kind comments encourage me a lot to keep on quilting - although I think I will never quit because it means so much to me.
