OMG, for years, I've been wanting to make a good (male) friend a "blue" quilt, but I haven't come across a design I felt would be just right. Until now.

Did you design this? Do you mind if I "copy" it? (Wouldn't be exactly the same, of course, but oh my, it would certainly be inspired by it!)

I might have to make one for myself as well. Concur with others who've said it's like the sea. Reminds me of the Pacific which I miss very very much.

WOW WOW I love your quilt!!! blue is my favorite color..

Wow, nice work. I think a fairly narrow, maybe the same width of the sashing, light border first. Then a darker, but not really dark one. That is one fine work of art!

Very, very nice. Great blues!

Wow everybody.....Thank you soooo much for your compliments, words of inspiration, and suggestions. I did make it for a male friend whose fav color is blue and he loves the water/fishing and the quiet of the night, so in addition to the batiks, there is fabric that looks like water and some with stars. I have four pieced fish that I was thinking of using as corner blocks in the border. This is based on a pattern from the book Batik Beauties by Laurie Shifrin. The book suggested different layouts, but I came up with this one. I tend to like symmetry and flow. I will keep working on this and will be sure to post the final outcome!! I LOVE this board....I'm on here everyday and am just so inspired by and appreciate you all!!!

I really love how the colors sparkle! Beautiful!

Jingle 04-21-2011 06:06 PM

Very pretty, you did a great job. I think a medium blue border if you only use one border.

Beautiful! I love the blues and the way you shaded them across the quilt is great.

Very nicely done!

I agree, a deep blue wide border will frame your beautiful blocks and emphasize the movement that you've achieved with your gradiated color layout,.

Sigh.
I always do.

Look how great the lightest lights look right next to the dark squares on that center diagonal. They're GLOWING.

I think a nice wide dark border will just make the whole center sparkle. It's like midnight.

However, conversely, if you used the lightest light on the border, you'd get a whole North Pole frigid feel to it. Which could be very interesting.

So either extreme, not some value in the middle because that would just muddle the whole quilt. One border. Wide.

And matching, not contrasting, binding.

imnsho. ;-) ;)

Love the Blues!

betsey 04-22-2011 03:34 AM

love it!! I think, if it were me, I'd chose the 2 or 3rd lightest for a narrow first border. For the 2nd border I'd pick the 2nd or 3rd darkest and cut that one wider. But you should audition your combinations first. Good luck-it's a beauty

Ozarkcastle 04-22-2011 05:20 AM

I lay my material out all the time and it never wakes up as a top! you have better elfs at your place.

do you have a favorite blue print in yardage that you can use as an outer border?

did you consider piano keys or a braid?

this is a great top, depending on what size you want it could be finished as is. JMHO- cw

Donna Mare 04-22-2011 05:21 AM
