Salvage - yes yes yes! I would put a black border on the top and bottom the same size as those on the side. Then I would bind with pink on the black sides and black binding upon the pink side just to make it very unique. Square it up before binding and no one will notice with its vivid theme colors. By the way, I am a breast cancer survivor and I cannot imagine anyone not loving this item. Congrats.

An extra border or two will allow you to add in small increments to even out that edge that bothers you. It won't bother anyone else. They will be so grateful for the thought that was put into this work.

OK, after looking really hard - needed your hint as to where to look, I see your "disaster". If the slight angle really bugs you, why not put on 2 borders on that are wonky...like one starts out 2" at the top and finishes at 1" at the bottom then put a strip that is 3" wide and trim it to square, which will make it different widths at the top and the bottom - the wonky there will mask the wee bit of wonky in the quilt.

OR you could heavily starch the piece and pin it square and let it dry...that covers a multitude of sins by stretching and shrinking to make it square.

madamekelly 03-01-2011 06:10 PM

Trim, frame, and keep going? IMHO

rather B stitchin 03-01-2011 06:10 PM

try sashing around the center square, maybe around the pinwheels then square those squares maybe just maybe it will square up

Trim the right and left sides, square it up and put a binding on it. Pin wheels look good!

Jingle 03-01-2011 07:52 PM

Beautiful, just finish it up.

biscuitqueen 03-01-2011 07:52 PM

It looks great, now you can finish it and add the boarders.

Ty 03-01-2011 07:56 PM

Looks good to me too. I didn't see whatever it was that was bothering you.

valpoquilter 03-01-2011 08:25 PM

Sew a border on it, and it will be fine. I like it.

franair 03-01-2011 08:46 PM

Just square it up and will be great.

Momsmurf 03-01-2011 08:48 PM

Looks fine to me also.

If it is an optical illusion as some have suggested, flip it around so it's upside down and see if the "left" side still looks crooked.

I agree - finish the boarder and then square it up a bit more. I had to look really close to see the minor problems. It looks awesome and everyone will love it.

I think it looks great, but I think if you add the borders and square it up, I think it will look great.

JCL in FL 03-01-2011 09:27 PM

If it were mine, I'd add that pink fabric to the top and bottom and square it up. Once it's quilted it won't look as wavy. It;s such a pretty quilt, I wouldn't want it hanging out in a closet somewhere.

Today trying to press out wrinkles I strtched the one hex block. sew-rip, sew-rip three times. Got so frustrated, put it away for the day. This one has been in the works since 2007. Any sugesstions? How can I fix it? Already attachesd the applique on it.

sumcoop 03-02-2011 05:20 AM

Trim down the boarders if the measurements at the top are off from the bottom.
I see what you are looking at and I would measure across the top, middle and bottom to see if it is out of square.
It may be optical illusion.
Trim and continue.

Neena 03-02-2011 05:27 AM

Finish it...it is a great quilt! As a breast cancer survivor, I can say being a little lopsided is not really a big deal...hehe

Riversong 03-02-2011 05:37 AM

I think its pretty!!!

Rettie V. Grama 03-02-2011 07:40 AM

I think you need new glasses. It is beautiful and by measuring it on line, can't find a problem. Finish it and don't worry about your thought that it is crocked.
No one but you will know how you aorried over it.

I definitely do not think it is a disaster. I can see where it is off square. The left pink border just needs to be straightened up. Put your long ruler at the top and line it up so it will be straight all the way down. Would that help you any?

Rock Lady 03-02-2011 10:52 AM

Let us know how it all comes out. The quilt itself is very, very pretty. Don't give up on it.

greaterexp 03-02-2011 11:00 AM

It's lovely! Quilt it, and it will be even more beautiful!

makakehau 03-02-2011 11:09 AM

Neena,
You're awesome!

Thanks,

Lori

I hope you put it away for a couple of days. I noticed, yes, the pink border on the left is smaller at the top, yes, there is more space between the top two black blocks, yes, the lower left triangle is smaller.
So, I would take off all the sides, SQUARE up the center block. Sew a little deeper seam in the top row between the two black blocks, then sew the pinwheels on. If you already trimmed the pink border, you will need to make sure they are all the same size before putting them back on. I hope this helps. (I like to do my best, even if it is for charity.)

My suggestion exactly! If the second border is about twice as wide as the pink border, you can square it up a bit without it being obvious.

Baby Catcher 03-02-2011 11:51 AM

I think it looks great but I do see what you're talking about. I would add a black inner border and then put the pink outer back on. I think this will work.

I only read the first 3 pages of replies, but I can see that the blocks on the left side get smaller as you go down the quilt, and so the left border strip looks crooked. I would trim that border at the top, tapering down to the edge, so that the whole thing is truly square, then also trim off a little of the right border. Then add pink borders to the top and bottom, same width as the right side.

Another thought for the future: this is one reason it's so important to measure all your blocks before sewing them together - to make sure they are all exactly the same size.

Yep....that's my thought too. It's not a disaster at all...just needs a little adjustment to one corner. Your team will love it.

Since the block in the lower left corner is actually most of the problem, adding a narrow black border will simply accentuate the wonkyness of this piece. Pink border will hide it better.

roseOfsharon 03-02-2011 04:08 PM

Looks great to me!

lue 03-02-2011 10:27 PM

So pretty! Why not just trim each side so that they are even, put a border around them and call it FABULOUS!!

Sew Krazy Girl 03-02-2011 10:33 PM

Keep going and don't give up.

Sandyt 03-03-2011 05:36 AM

Coming from a cancer survivor. It is beautiful. Just add a border. What pattern is that? I think I would like to make one.

Hi Lori -- I've looked at your beautiful square and got my handy dandy ruler out and believe the left side is not quite straight. Take the sash off and remeasure down, matching the points. If the points don't match, try re-sewing the point in question by adjusting them on the back until they line up with the top and bottom square. Then remeasure the width of your sash to match the right side and sew it back on. From the picture, it looks wider at the bottom than at the top. Hope this helps. If not, never mind!!

Nan :D :D
