First Log Cabin quilt finished

3 Attachment(s)
I started this project on Friday afternoon and just finished it. This is the first log cabin pattern I have made and I did the entire thing with scrap fabric. The closest fabric store is 100 miles away so I had to make due with what I had. I'm very pleased with it, however! I used a walking foot for the first time on this quilt. My husband liked the fabrics and the pattern so much he wants me to make a kig sized quilt. Yeah right. Can you imagine how many 1 inch strips would be needed? :)

beautiful...but if you made two inch strips it would take only half as long!

:) I tried to tell him that, but he really likes the small strips. When I do a larger quilt, I will use wider strips! It was a pain working with 1 inch strips!

The fabrics do work together sooooooooooooo nicely. Now for your husband, why not go up to 2" strips, you will be amazed how quickly they will go.

catladyquilts 02-18-2013 04:18 AM

Very nice and love the colors! When you get ready to make the other one enlist his help in cutting the strips. ;)

You did a great job! Its always fun working from the stash, too.

LindaMRB 02-18-2013 04:58 AM

Nice work!
I like your colors and yes, 1-inch strips are a pain. So can you show us what these scraps came from? I like your fabrics and would like to see what else you made with them.

nunnyJo 02-18-2013 05:07 AM

Tweety2911 02-18-2013 08:33 AM

Gorgeous! You had just the perfect fabrics to blend together. Love it!

Helen S 02-18-2013 09:17 AM

Love the color combination! I agree, making it with the 1" strips takes a lot longer. I'm in the quilting stage of one now that presently measures about 85" X 108" without border or binding and I'll be SO glad when it's done! SOON! lol

crafty pat 02-18-2013 09:25 AM

I love your beautiful quilt. Job well done. I would tell DH to take you on a fabric buying trip and if he cuts the strips you will make the quilt. He may decide he does not want the quilt so much after all.

Thanks! My mom laughs at my stash because she says it looks like I went to one collection in our quilt store and bought it out. Not quite that bad, but I have always loved the dark reds, browns, tans, golds, greens, and creams - they remind me of the colors of the earth where I live after a rain and make me happy. Here are a few quilts I have made where my stash comes from...

This is my current project - I'm about 75% finished with the hand quilting.

A little runner I made for our 101 year old piano. I don't like this quilt as the pattern book was completely wrong and I ended up buying fabric for it twice. The quality is just not good and my old machine wasn't working right so I just plugged through to get it finished.

Another table scarf...

A small quilt for my sister...

And one for my mother in law...

Last one - a simple heart I made for my dining room...

I actually found it a lot easier to piece the blocks than any other quilt I've made because there are no seams to match up as you make it. Once you start putting the blocks together, there are seams to match, but it isn't bad. I also liked not working with triangles for a change - rectangles are so much easier!

purplecat 02-18-2013 10:04 AM

You've made a beautiful quilt!
