okay, i've been jabbering about hating this quilt. here's why: it's a first attempt at SO MANY points without sashing. it's my first feathers. it's my first stipples. the colors are so muddy they look like i chose them in a hole in the ground. i made it for my dsister's birthday and that's long gone. i chose the pattern for sentimental reasons, "sister's choice", and i never liked it.

after years of quilting and loving my own work, i hate this one. i do fine with other kinds of quilting designs, points, etc. but of course i chose my own colors. she likes dull colors, soooo.!

so here it is. have pity and don't be too harsh. i shouldn't have tried so many 'news' on the same project. live and sometimes learn.

more:

the thread was poly variegated. yellow - white on the back and i tried to match the front colors. you can see that the points won.

patricej 04-28-2009 01:49 PM

well, my dear, that's some of the best lookin' mud i've seen in a month of sundays.

you can always adopt me as your new sister and send it my way. there's plenty of time until my next birthday.

Sorry to dissappoint you but.......................... I like it :)

SulaBug 04-28-2009 01:53 PM

Butterflywing,
I think you did a good job, on this quilt. We all have to start some where, that's how we learn. You might not like it, but I do!! :D I am sure you will find just the right person, to give it too. Thanks for sharing.
Sulabug,
Cheryl

LOL

Dude... I'm with the others... best looking mud I've seen in a long time! :-)

leona07 04-28-2009 02:00 PM

Apparently I am a fan of mud!!!

butterflywing 04-28-2009 02:03 PM

believe me, this is the most photogenic quilt i ever saw. the center pink is really so dusty as soon as you see it you want to scrub it. the wine color is really maroony/brown. the dark green is pine-tar green and the light green is dirty olive. the outside green is moldy sage. and last but definitely not least - - - the gold is not gold. it's really baby-sh*t mustard. like in a diaper. altogether muddy. she'll be so happy.

ROTFLOL

Love the description more than the quilt! ;-)

leona07 04-28-2009 02:07 PM

Hmmmm...babysh*t mustard, is that next to the bloody nose Ketchup at the grocery store??

Jim's Gem 04-28-2009 02:11 PM

LOL, love your description of the colors!! I think the quilt looks fine!! If those are the colors she likes than she'll love it.

she likes antique-y looking quilts, which is why i washed it. as for the colors, she will love them. i think she's manic depressive and should be on tranqs.

Debbie1 04-28-2009 02:23 PM

I haven't seen anything wrong with this quilt. I'll send my address so you can get rid of it! But I love your description of it! I think your quilting was good!

Chele 04-28-2009 02:30 PM

LOL! Wish I had a sister to "talk about!" I can tell you guys are close. Lucky!

As for this quilt, just LOOK at your quilting! How do you do that? First time, my foot! You must have the quilting gene big time. Send me some of that talent.

I think the colors are lovely, but I probably need medication too! You should probably consider naming paint colors as your interpretations had me spitting my drink!

Congrats on finishing a lovely quilt for your sister. She's going to flip!

mpspeedy 04-28-2009 02:33 PM

Hey, I don't see any problem with your quilt. The most important thing is that it is done. If everything had to be absolutely perfect none of us would finish anything. Don't be so hard on yourself. There are lots of us out there that would love to have it in our home.

bearpaw 04-28-2009 02:45 PM

I really like it! Great feathers for a first attempt! I don't think the colors are bad at all.

kluedesigns 04-28-2009 02:45 PM

i think its great.

i love color - i had to buy black and white fabric for the swap because everything i own is color.

i love the pink and the gold together it looks great.

you're being far to hard on yourself on this quilt - i'm sure its because its for your sister and you want it to be perfect.

the quilting is excellent - i can't do a feather to save my life.

Knot Sew 04-28-2009 03:13 PM

I like it to...I call those rich full colors lol

krabadan 04-28-2009 03:43 PM

I like it too!

Overlander 04-28-2009 03:48 PM

Wow! There is nothing wrong with this quilt - especially for so many "firsts" as you say. I love the bold colors and your quilting is great. If your sister doesn't want it I have a bed just aching for a pretty quilt like this. :)

Ninnie 04-28-2009 03:48 PM

You are being too critical. There is absolutely nothing wrong with that quilt, I like it. Put it away for a few days and then get it back out and you will see it differently!

Well, I'm pretty impressed with your first time feather circles! I could even recognize that they were feathers and that there was a circle of them! (You sure couldn't on my first times)...and I agree...you need to be somewhere where you can name colors for paint..wallpaper...fabrics...something! You know everyone would dash out to buy stuff with names like you give them!!! I like your quilt! And you know your sister will like it and would if it were made of real mud!

Ducky 04-28-2009 03:57 PM

Oh, Butterfly, your postings have had me in stitches. I have laughed out loud. I absolutely love your sense of humor -- you never fail to make me laugh.

Now on to that muddy "thing" you made. I guess there has got to be a new definition of muddy nowadays, huh? I may be manic depressive because I liked the thought of the quilt having more muted colors than in the pictures. And your stippling was gorgeous!!!! I'm jealous, as I'm too terrified to try stippling. Oh, you funny lady, in other words, I truly liked your quilt. In fact, I am officially shoving Patrice out of the way. I would like to be your new sister, okay? (oooh, ooooh, pick me, pick me!!!!). LOL, and you sister WILL love it.

sewjoyce 04-28-2009 03:57 PM

Well, I like it!! (Wanna be my sis???)

pal 04-28-2009 04:39 PM

I think you did a wonderful job on the feathering and stippling - the
back looks great!!!

It's really hard to like a quilt if you don't like the colors.

I tried to live with a triple Irish Chain bedspread that I did in pink and green, . I finally had to put it in the closet and will use it as a blanket because the color combination is so distasteful to me.

Your sister will probably love it - because she chose the colors!

.

beachlady 04-28-2009 04:43 PM

Thanks for the chuckle, but I like it too!

sewnsewer2 04-28-2009 04:43 PM

Well, I don't know why you hate it, I think it's very pretty! The colors don't look dull to me either. Good job!

mommaB 04-28-2009 05:00 PM

What your sister will like best about it is the love and thought that went into it :D :D

KGoodhand 04-28-2009 05:15 PM

I think you did a great job!
As for all those 'firsts' - I would not have known that at all!
I am sure, like it has ben said before, your sister will love it!!
Kendra

thismomquilts 04-28-2009 05:26 PM

looks nice to me!!

amma 04-28-2009 05:41 PM

I think you did a wonderful job on your sister's quilt! I have made a quilt with colors that I would not have chose in a million years, but the recipient is very happy with them :D I think you did a good job on the quilting! John Flynn said that in nature, nothing is perfect and concentric...so that makes your quilt perfect :D :D :D

butterflywing 04-28-2009 06:22 PM

thank you all for your kind comments. i love how supportive you all are.

john flynn should have his head examined.

one sister at one time is all i can stand.

the only thing i do like about it, is that it came out very square. by the way, the fabrics are all way off-grain, and i didn't fight it.

the colors are, really, very murky. i like bold color and these are not my style at all. i would have made it blue.

i drew the feathers right on the fabric with a chalk marker and followed the lines. nothing special about that. same with the stippling. and no two blocks are the same size.

i am very disappointed in myself. i bit off more than i could chew. which is why i've been working this quilt since november.

EDIT: my sister knows very little about quilting, so she will like it. as for the job, i have sold much better quilts than this and that's what's infuriating!

tslowery 04-28-2009 06:32 PM

I needed a good laugh I am laughing my butt off at that description. I like the quilt if your sister says ugh send it on to Ga we are famous for Mud Clay your color description is hilarious. You go girl. If my bad looks half that good I would be happy.

Mousie 04-28-2009 06:50 PM

B, your going to think I am making this up, but I like those colors!
And it may not be up to par with your other work...only you would know, but looks good to me. Are you going to give it to her? Tell her the problems you had, and that you made yourself finish it anyway, as a gesture of your love for her. She will love that. :D

Mousie 04-28-2009 06:53 PM
