I want to make a quilt of this picture... but I have NO idea of how to start.

Does anyone have any tips? A link? A book you'd recommend?

This is on the Southern Shore of Newfoundland... also known as the Irish Shore in a little place called Tors Cove. We have sat there looking down at the Cribbeys ( that's the name of this tiny spot) and watched whales breach just beyond the headland. It is heaven on earth for me. And very special for my husband as his greatgrandmother was born in Tors Cove.

sorry, I can't help you with the quilt, Mamagus. I just wanted to say that is such a beautiful, serene area. Oh, I hope you will do an art quilt.

I can't help you with your question, but what a beautiful area. I can certainly see why you would want to make a quilt of it.

i would trace all the major elements of the picture - the house/windows/door, the road, the mountains, the hills.

then scan that into the computer, enlarge it to the size that you want the quilt to be, then print it out.

tape the pages to a light source (i use my sliding glass doors) and trace then pattern onto freeze paper or fusible web.

then you cut out the pattern pieces and adhere them to the fabric.

that landscape is beautiful and i'm sure the quilt will look great.

I have a book called Landscape Quilts, by Natalie Sewell, it's got tons of great tips and hints for your project, notes and details about fabric selection and all kinds of stuff. You should take a look at the book, even if you just leaf through it at your local bookstore.

I can't help with the quilt either, but just wanted to say what a beatiful picture. Must be very cool to watch the whales!

Oh Mama...that will really be a beautiful quilt when you are done! Does the cute little house have special meaning to you or your DH? Klue gave you the technique that I used on my portrait quilt of my cat. Thats about as close to "landscape" as I've come.

A few years back Nancy Zieman did a lot of landscape quilts and had shows on them. Check out her website: www.nancysnotions.com
