Great idea Ditter, plus, then you don't have to match seams!! Win/Win!! And the book I have on French Braids shows all of them with "separator bands". See, there's even a term for them, so it's legit to use them!

I think its great and would love to see the finished project. Scrappy quilts are my favorites.

I am doing a scrappy strippy quilt using 1.5" finished squares...kind of a postage stamp style done by joining together rows of squares. I had about half the strips done when I lost interest. I put it aside for a week but then I took it out and did a row or part of a row each day before I worked on other projects. I'm still not finished but I feel like I'm making progress. Hope this idea helps you.

QuiltingQueen 05-10-2010 03:19 AM

You have to keep going! It is too beaultiful not to finish.

I agree, you have come to far not to finish, good job!

quiltinghere 05-10-2010 03:29 AM

I'm working on a TWO braid quilts right now. When finished the overall width will be a little larger than yours but the height will be about 6 feet. We can challenge each other to work on it DAILY for at least 1 hour. I can do it - can you? (wink wink)

I think it looks beautiful and agree with OMAH that when you MAKE yourself do something for 15 minutes it carries over into 30 or 60 minutes without you even realizing it!

Like GAL suggested MAKE yourself work on it for a little while before doing something else. Sometimes we have to PARENT OURSELVES!

I'll throw in that maybe you NEED to work on something else while working on this too...just to break up the boredom of doing the same thing over and over and over . . .
Do you have any other project IN PROGRESS NOW that you can work on? Some paperpiecing or hand sewing?

Good luck - you can do it (and so can I) - wanna bet?

thequilterslink 05-10-2010 04:11 AM

Oh My, you have it licked, don't quit now. It is gorgeous, great job.

Ditter

Yeah, that might be a great idea! You could consider it if you are truly tired of piecing. Oh wait... I am supposed to be encouraging you. YOU GO GIRL! Seriously, it looks fantastic!

Oh yeah I have a wedding dress down there that I am avoiding too. and curtains that I am avoiding and about 5 other quilts that I have told myself I will not work on until I finish something else first. I am so screwed up it is ridiculous.

GrammaNancy 05-10-2010 04:39 AM

It is beautiful. Takes a lot of patience but it will be so nice when done.

Boston1954 05-10-2010 05:08 AM

It's gorgeous!! Now get into that sewing room and get it done! (how's that?)

Oklahoma Suzie 05-10-2010 09:44 AM

Luv Quilts and Cats 05-10-2010 10:08 AM

How beautiful! Keep going, you are so close to having it done. You will be so happy to finish it.

Jingle 05-10-2010 10:20 AM

I like the way you are doing it and it will be absolutely gorgeous when you get it finished. Love the pattern and colors. Good job.

Crafty1 05-10-2010 10:39 AM

Keep on going! It's looking good so far

Barbm 05-10-2010 10:50 AM

I reached that same plateau with mine. At least those were 2 1/2 by 7 1/2. I used a strip between because I thought it was too busy.

I actually challenged myself- I couldn't go on to the next project until it was done. The top is done, but I don't have anywhere big enough to lay it out to sandwich it. I've finished a few projects since then- waiting for the wind to die down so I can lay it out on the deck.

So- get tough with yourself- no new projects- no new fun!

gloryj8 05-10-2010 10:57 AM

just think about when its done and how pretty it will be...

kwhite 05-10-2010 02:27 PM

Ok I took inventory and cut 100 more pieces to finish and made one more strip.

So 9 to go.

Barbm can you post your finished quilt here??

Tallulah 05-10-2010 02:38 PM

It is going to be beautiful and I can't wait to see it. I love the idea of working on it in small time bites until you are finished. Sometimes we just get tired or overwhelmed by a project.
It is going to be great!

Good for you, kwhite! I KNEW you would do it <g> <wave>

1quilt_gma 05-10-2010 04:11 PM

9 more rows, only 9 more rows. You have done 2 rows in 2 days, as well as cutting 100 more pieces.

You are quicker than I am....if I were doing it, I would allow myself a row a day, which is slightly over a week.

So I know you can do one row each day! Then relax your mind and work on other projects.

So you will have time at the end of the month to celebrate Memorial Day!

Evangeline 05-10-2010 04:11 PM

You go girl!!! That quilt is too gorgeous to give up on!!!

kwhite 05-10-2010 08:24 PM

So tonight I am talking to my 21 year old daughter about my quilt. She said, " I have been thinking about why you always make color chaos quilts. You can't match colors so you make these so anything goes." I have to say..... That girl is smart.

Ditto Ditter! :) Just what I was thinking.

sylvia77 05-10-2010 09:20 PM

How about making a strip a day until you're done? I think it needs a solid in between the strips as well in my opinion. You must finish it as we're all rooting for you, so go girl!

smagruder 05-11-2010 01:44 AM

What beautiful colors. It will be absolutely gorgeous when finished. Now, you have to finish to show it to us....

gaigai 05-11-2010 02:43 AM

I know!!! Just tell yourself you can't start your storm at sea until you've finished this one!

Hmmm, maybe I should pick out the fabrics for mine, just to motivate you!

Nanjun 05-11-2010 02:55 AM

Looks good just a lot of work

That's exactly what I was thinking! The solid strips might highlight the braids even more!

quiltinghere 05-11-2010 05:25 AM

LOL When's the wedding? Get that wedding dress DONE SOONER THAN LATER so that it's FUN TO DO and not a stressful nighmare! Come on Girl! You too can do it!

Are the curtains the velvet ones? Can those hold off till fall starts to set in...then you'll be motivated to get them done before the cold of winter comes.

Ahhhh the UFO pile of quilts - nothing more needs to be said about those - we all have them!

GLAD to hear you finished up 2 more rows and cut more charms all in one day! WOOHOO!! You go girl!

I finished up another column (I can't call them rows because to ME rows go left and right and my construction will make them go up and down - hence columns).

3 more to go (or 6 if you look at it that I'm making 2 of each column) I look at it as 3...

That's exactly what I was thinking! The solid strips might highlight the braids even more!

When all the braids are done - PREVIEW the braids on a solid piece of fabric - just lay them out (fold back the corners that you're going to trim off later if necessary) - and then think about adding a strip in between the rows. It would make a resting place for the eye (if that's what you want). Mine has a red charm IN the colums so that's where the eye will rest.

I used the PREVIEW method when I made another top and was trying to decide if I wanted a lot of the 10" squares to be the same fabric with a few different ones thrown in. It was better than cutting up all that fabric only to discover I didn't like it. Maybe I can post a picture later,

Strip - no Strip - that'll come later - Keep Sewing! LOL

I will give you all the motivation you need, WOW.. Great work.

Sheree from Chicago 05-11-2010 06:59 AM

Wow! Can't wait to see it finished!

ToucanSam 05-11-2010 07:01 AM

I love it! Keep going! :)

I've seen some books (I think) on braided quilts, but was wondering if someone would be willing to do a tutorial on here.

:)

MamaBear61 05-11-2010 07:26 AM

Wow, that is pretty, don't stop now.

flikkem 05-11-2010 07:33 AM

I really like this but am confused how you sew the pieces together to get this effect.

Barbm 05-11-2010 07:43 AM

Toucansam- I found a free pattern online- let me look at home for it. Something and Sultry it was called.

CoriAmD 05-11-2010 08:10 AM

WOW! that is AWESOME!!! You must keep going so we can all see the finished result! One braid at a time... and the next thing you know, it's done!
