I can't believe just the four of us took this on, although I think there will be more quilts like this in the future from downloaded instructions. Looking forward, Angie, to seeing yours completed. It was fun to see how each stage really changed the look of the quilt!

As for the quilting, well, I don't have anything fancy planned. I'm going to have to think about it a bit. Those star centers turned out pretty good for me, not too bulky. I altered the instructions slightly by starting my seams 1/4" in and using my lock stitch. That left me the center bits that could be turned to lay flat.

omak 07-15-2009 08:42 AM

B.Zang! Aren't you the clever one, though?
Can you explain about the lock stitch? Is that similar to making the machine stitch two or three times in the same place?
I decided I was going to cut out another one of those quilts for tomorrow, and then! remembered I had loaned my pattern to a friend!
Maybe I will do delectable mountains ...
so many choices! too much time ... so little ability to make up my mind! LOL

How do u make those blocks?
what is it called and what do i need to make it?
and is it very hard for a beginner in quilting but sum sewing experiance?

cutebuns 07-15-2009 01:04 PM

The blocks were not hard at all. The directions when they were posted were pretty clear is you could read them, This is where you can find them. http://planetpatchwork.com/Case127/case127part1.htm

Most quilting is not that big a jump if you have sewing experience. Some things are different but most of it is just the same. And if you have any problems the board is usually pretty good at talking everyone through it.

The instructions has a list of everything that you will need.

sunnyhope 07-15-2009 01:06 PM

what i think is hardest is actually lining things straight and cut things straight

cutebuns 07-15-2009 01:28 PM

there are ways to fold the fabric to make it easier to get it straight. then practice with the ruler and rotary cutter, once you get a handle on it things will get more accurate. Take your time, especially when you first start. and do some reading. There is a lot of information on this site and others, and if you like the internet you tube usually has a lot of videos to watch as well.

Overlander 07-15-2009 02:53 PM

All the quilts posted from this mystery session are great. You ladies are very talented and FAST!

Thank you! Our creative little monkey!
I now have the directions to make a second one ... so, my friend can pass her instructions on to someone else!
I thought the directions had been taken down by the time I got home last night, and didn't even go look.
Thank you! Now, I have the pattern I want to cut out for tomorrow's Operation 1161 sew-in THANK YOU!

And, if you are a persistent beginner, you will be able to do fine with this quilt ... there are no inset seams, straight sewing only, and if you have to do that HST thing they teach you how to draw the lines so that you are never really alone.
So! SUnnyhope! We will be looking forward to your quilt also, eh? Cool!

Honestly, if I knew what the end result was going to look like, I would not have started. Instead, I would have said, "oh, that's far too difficult for me". But, by following the directions, step-by-step, look what I ended up making! It wasn't hard at all, although I did take time to keep tabs on my matching.

The quilt pattern is called "Hunter's Star".

The only thing I didn't have in my stash when I started was backing fabric, but I won't get to town to buy any until the weekend, so for now this will be it. The colours are a little washed out from my inadequate camera skills but overall I'm pleased with how this turned out.

Wow, you should be pleased. It's very nice!

Mousie 07-16-2009 05:50 PM

wowee, Cutie, that is awesome!!! wanted to read all the replies, but it's almost ten pm...cant get back on till tomorrow night! awesome, I tell ya, just awesome!

omak 07-16-2009 06:06 PM

So! Today I had another sewin in Moses Lake at Quilt Crossing ... so, I woke up bright and early and cut everything.
Rather than use twelve different lights, I decided to just pick up three or four lights and start cutting away ... I don't remember how many I actually used to get all the pieces, but I got it done, loaded up the van and headed on into town.
Then, all the girls got there, and I was entertaining the troops ... and messed up Part two ... regroup, sew things back together that I had inadvertantly cut apart, and continued on my not so merry way!
Obviously , I didn't get the whole quilt top completed, however, that is not a problem, because I am going to make another one!
WHen I get this top completed, do y'all want me to post it here? I mean, it is where it came from.
ANd, I am going to keep making this quilt until I get it right or life intervenes <g> I feel so PRODUCTIVE! LOL

What a riot :D :D I SO understand.
Please, put a picture of your completed quilt here. This is where we belong!
Mine is still just a top. We're going camping this weekend, but little does DH know that our trip will include a stop at the LQS for some backing fabric
The lock stitch that I used on my star centers is one of the features on my machine. It seems to take a few stitches right on top of each other. I've never had it come undone.

cutebuns 07-16-2009 07:20 PM

Post away, this is what this one is for, I hope to see a lot more pictures.

So you are just like the rest of us if you are loonie.

If you need specific help, something just not working out, just ask, I am sure we can help you through it. and then practice.

omak 07-17-2009 08:25 PM

Thank you about the lock stitch. It is similar to me holding the quilt in one place and having the machine sew in place.
Will post picture when completed (the top that is <g>). Today was a day at the convention over to spokane, up at four thirty ... really draggin' now!
No nap two days in a row.
Tomorrow will be waiting for four loads of hay and weed spraying ... and a NAP!
although! If I get up early, I will probably get some sewing done.
I am glad I am not the only person who decides to make something until they get it right.
When I was a waitress, they had a game they played at coffee called "Horse"? don't remember what it was all about, but I used to tell the guys they would have to play me until I won ... it was always good for a smile! LOL
SOrt of the way I feel about this quilt ...

Thank you, I am jsut learning on the machine and it was a lot of fun to play in the quilt, There is more stitching on it that on the last queen size quilt that I did. It turned out pretty good though, I am happy with it.

I am the short one on the right HOLDING the quilt!

amma 07-26-2009 10:07 PM

Very Pretty!!! I have loved watching and listening to everyones mystery quilt adventures :D :D :D

omak 07-26-2009 10:15 PM

Thank you for all your kind words ... nothing will make me produce like a little flattery! LOL
Anyway, hubby thinks that my next quilt needs to be an autumn quilt to be awarded to the lucky person who gets their name drawn at the October appreciation dinner.
I was going to just make a wall hanging, but he got this look on his face ... so, I guess this is NOT the end of this particular Mystery QUilt! LOL

cutebuns 07-26-2009 10:24 PM

Good thing it is not to long of a project anyway, by then you will be whipping them out in no time, maybe oranges for the stars? Maybe tans for the lights? I would be tempted to do red for the sashing. hmmm, my mind is a blank when I am trying to think of more fall colors

I found some really yummy orange/yellow with fireflies on it (ink drawing type bugs <g>) and there are the different shades of green, certain reds, rusts, brown, I think I will be able to pull it off ... have yards of background ... may use scraps to make the borders this time ... we shall see what we shall see.
With the sashing, this quilt has a good balance of light, compared to the dark/medium ... not too much light, just enough to add highlights. Can even throw in some animal prints, though I am not a big one for wild animals ... all that endangered species garbage sort of ticks me off ... well, more than sort of, but sort of will do fine for the moment <g>. I may lighten up a bit for the event ...

cutebuns 07-26-2009 10:44 PM

I know that fabric land had a print with a bunch of leaves in it in about 3 or 4 different colors, some of that would work. Great that you already have it forming in your head. you will be able to do it in your sleep after this.

I love it!!! And the black sets it off great. the little blue squares just pop!
And that dog is too cute!! And he works for his supper!
So I haven't made this quilt yet, but when I do, I know there is a lot of help here when I get stuck!!! Thanks for posting the pictures and you look lovely standing there behind that quilt!

butterflywing 07-27-2009 05:35 AM

omak,

i love the reds. it makes it so different from the purples. interesting how a color change changes the whole feeling of a quilt, right?

Iluv2quilt 07-27-2009 05:52 AM

I really love your quilt! Beautiful!

omak 07-27-2009 06:56 AM

<bows to all applause>
LOL
I am really going to have to do a bunkhouse in PDA ... but, not yet ... have REAL time work to do .... bummer!
Thank you all for your encouragement and sharing. Makes a gal feel like she really did something special <g>.

b.zang 07-27-2009 07:00 AM

The black sashing really pops the quilt. Can't wait to see it quilted :)

Mine is still being quilted. I had a hold-up getting backing fabric, then needed thread (another trip to town) and am finally working on it. Not quite finished, but think I'll run out of time before it's done. Everything is going on hold around here while we entertain grandkids for a month.
I've used your idea, Cute, and have echo quilted the stars. Looks great!

omak 07-27-2009 07:17 AM

I have not practiced stopping and starting with my quilting set up, but I guess there is no time like the present, eh?

cutebuns 07-27-2009 08:04 AM

It is a little more work as you have to cut and secure your ends. but ut us worth it.

I can't wait to see it, you will have to send out a reminder when you are done B Zang

Mousie 07-27-2009 11:59 AM

I do love lots of color in a quilt omak :D
Can't wait to see what you do in fall colors, I have a bundle waiting on me to do one, but it will be a whimsical type. :D

Well, here it is. In my rush to get everything ready for the kidlets and finish the quilting, I didn't quilt quite so heavily as I had intended. It's in the dryer right now; hope it holds up (I'm pretty sure it will :) ).

My DH is planning to use it for laying out his bows on when he displays them for sale.

Maybe one day I'll re-do some parts of this!

omak 07-28-2009 07:28 PM

THat is a terrific quilt, Barbara!
I wish I knew how to shop to get the lights like you have used.
I do know that your bright yellow is what inspired the bright yellow in the second quilt I did.
Your quilt will be fine.

I don't know where I got the idea for this block is "Hunter Star", because it is actually just an eight pointed star.

http://www.quilterscache.com/H/HuntersStarBlock.html

This is what the hunter star is, just in case you want to make it to go along with hubby's hunting theme? But, the bows will look good backdropped by your quilt ... big compliment to have hubby have a plan for your fine work!
Very pretty ... in case I didn't quite get that point across <g>
