Only people that like scrappy quilts will appreciate this photo

For months I have been cutting all kinds of fabric up into 2 1/2 inch pieces. I go to Good Will, Salvation Army and yard sales and buy mostly big skirts for a variety of cotton fabrics to cut up. This is a large cooler where I have been saving all the fabric. I had to put all these squares in the dryer to circulate all the fabric. It will be a scrappy quilt that will be cozy quilt, one that I won't be afraid to use.

This should be great fun to create. You have now started on a wonderful, creative adventure (smile). I look forward to seeing your completed quilt pics. Thank you for sharing.

Can't wait to see it finished!

I just want to sit down and start playing....
will this piece look good with this one or awwweee...look at this combination! Have a great time creating this quilt.
Just a short while ago, I finished cutting all of my scraps into various sized squares. A lot of time and effort was put into this organizing effort. Which I am thrilled with the outcome. So, I know what you are going through with this process. Keep at it and before long you will have everything you want for the quilt. Thanks for sharing. |
Love the scrappies. I am so jealous!
|
Just curious? what pattern will you use? or NO pattern and just start sewing?
|
You will have fun. I call these my utility quilts. I have made two very scrappy large quilts which I use everyday on my beds. Then if the dogs decide to nap I won't go crazy. The last one I did was the stretched star from the Nickle Quilts book and no square is the same. It is fing size. You will love this project. Have fun.

Have fun! It will be beautiful.

This quilt will be an awwwwwwwwweee quilt LOL All combination of colors nothing will match at all.

Oh, the possibilities:) My hands are itching to get in that box of squares!

Looks like you have a great start. Can't wait to see the completed project.

Love the dryer idea. Keep us "posted" on your progress.

I won't be using a pattern just nine patches (I think you call it) I have never taken a class just wing it kind of thing) The one large quilt I made I used 2 1/2 squares and made into log strips. It came out very uneven and now I know why. I try to learn from the ladies here. I know I will never be an expert but I am having fun. I would like to take a class on quilting but I am afraid I will look silly.

That's a great idea about the skirts at GW. I go there to buy sheets and other larger pieces of fabric but didn't think about a large woman's skirt having lots of good cotton fabric. Thanks!
|
I have two dog and they will be welcome to sleep on this quilt.

Should turn out great. Unfortunately for me I have a hard time with scrappy. I have to use paper bags and just sew what I pull out unless it is the same fabric.

Love scrappy and you've got a nice selection. Have fun!

Like everyone else said - looks like it will be fun to make.

This is really addictive! I started buying men's shirts to make some quilts. I calculated that I needed 20 and wound up with close to 100. I cut all mine into. 5 inch squares. I think cutting them all into a specific size is a great idea. I've made 5 tops so far (posted pictures here last month) . You are really going to have fun! Please post pics of your tops!

I am going to be doing this after Christmas to use up some of my scraps. You are a genius to put that in the dryer to mix them up!!! Thx for the idea!!!
|
I am so glad everyone seems to like the idea my scrappy quilt. I like the scrappies because they seem more forgiving if you are self taught like me.
|
The dryer idea come about when I really wanted to go to the bing hall and aske them to use the ball machine to mix them up LOL

I can't wait to see the final product - or even your progress as you go!
|
I love scrappy and that looks like a great start.

You are quilting the way women traditionally did it... with fabrics salvaged from old clothes. For me it's very satisfying to continue a long tradition like that. Enjoy!
|
I love scrap quilts as they remind me of the ones my grandmother made, she used to collect her scraps from other church members, and those who sewed. She made me several quilts for myself and my sons using scraps I gave her from sewing projects. Now when I view those quilts, I remember her and those things I had sewn, and wonder about the stories from the fabrics I know werent mine in the quilt.
We will be interested to see your quilt in the future.:) |
Well that certainly is a new use for a cooler!!! That pile really looks like fun just waiting for a needle and thread.
|
Can't wait to see the finished product!
|
Yes I can appreciate that photo. I love scrap quilts
|
Good thought mixing it up in dryer... and salvaging the fabric...... Look forward to seeing it finished...
|
You go girl! That's a lot of hard work!
|
I keep saving my scraps too, and think I will start after the holidays putting them together. Just like a One Block Wonder is a fun surprise as to what it will look like in the end, the same will be true of a scrap quilt. I also have a spider web quilt that uses scraps as the background and 1 1/2 inch strips of varying fabrics to make the webs.I am half way through with it and look forward to adding more scraps to finish it off.
I hope you will post it along with this first picture when you are done. Enjoy |
you should have lots of fun with this project....woman after my own heart.................never thought of putting them in the dryer to mix up the scraps...good idea!!!!
|
I never would've thought of using the dryer to mix up the scraps. Did you have a problem with edges of the squares fraying after being in the dryer? Or is that only a concern if the fabric had been washed and was wet.
|
That is a great idea to post it later with the original photo and the finished quilt

I found some the fabrics frayed a little but before I cut any of the fabrics I always washed and dried and ironed the item (skirt or what ever it was )so I can't really say which ones frayed more. I only put them in the dryer for about 5 minutes with three dryer sheets. I hand mixed the squares by themselves first but realized this was doing nothing that is why I put them in the dryer.
