Pickled Ladies Continued
4 Attachment(s)
I thought I'd start a new thread on this quilt as I work along to finish it. I started this last year, I think. One block does take some time and I have been doing two a day for the past two days now. It will take a lot of them to do a 60x60 quilt. I have 19 made so far.
I'm not sure how many I need because it depends on how I set them, maybe 30 something or so. The blocks are 10 inches across. I will put in a pie shape here and there that I cut out of the scrap left from the clam shape. I have discovered these wonderful clips. I found then at Joanns with my 50 % coupon. I will never use pins again unless absolutely necessary lol. I thought I would make a bunch of all green blocks to disperse among all the color. I love the greens in there. |
Eye spy ones too! looking great!!!
Love the Pickled Ladies. It's on my list of things to do. Have the pattern and the fabric all ready.
Coming along nicely!
I am really enjoying this project. I may have to try one.
looks great
Very interesting pattern. That is going to be a fun quilt, will enjoy following along.
so very nice!!!
I am not going to pickle all of them. I like just the pretty all fabric ones too. I had re-drafted this block in EQ. Well I made a point of learning to do it and this pattern is perfect now. I made the crown and the shell and then made a template of the crown and shell all in one to match for the plain blocks. I have made two green ones so far and will post new pics when I have a few green ones done and dispersed/

What a fun project, Rosy!
What an awesome eye spy. I love what you are doing. What a great mix of pickles and solids.
I Love your blocks and clips.... I read that you re drafted the blocks what was the name of the original pattern
very nice :) |
stunning work!
Looks like a lot of concentration is needed in this one. Can't wait for the finish.
Nice going! This is very pretty and will only be more so as you go along. Nice choice of fabrics. Keep us poster as you progress. It is so much fun to share someone else's journey.
Rosie, what a wonderful quilt this will be....beautiful.
The original design is Karen Stone Clam Session. There is not a pattern. I HAVE TRIED FOR TWO YEARS NOW to get a response from Karen. I even contacted a group on the east coast that sponsored her class on this quilt several years ago. THEY HAD NO INFORMATION......They said Karen was hard to communicate with....they had to threatened to cancel their class to get her to call them about her arrival.....not responsive. Too bad...there are a lot of us that would have gladly paid for the pattern....instead we are left to our devices. LIKE EQ, right, Rosie. |
You're making good progress!
very pretty! very pretty!
Those clamshells look pretty large...what is the size.....will you be machine piecing those shells together or hand piecing? Very colorful.
interesting story about the supposed originator of this design.....wonder why she is incommunicado..... |
Thank you for including us in the PROCESS of making this quilt. BTW I, too, think the green is pulling the overall look together wonderfully.
I love this quilt. I don't think I've ever seen one before. Are you sewing them together or appliqueing them to another piece of fabric. Since there is no pattern available for this, maybe you could do a tutorial? I would love to know how to do it.
I found this blog post that links to Barbara Brackman and has a link also to Inklingo. https://quiltobsession.wordpress.com...a-pickle-dish/ Interesting. Perhaps the lady does not communicate because the pattern is not hers???
Those blocks look very difficult to do but they are beautiful. How are they attached together?
Wow, you have more patience than I do.

Now I have read an old post and the ladies were trying to figure out how she did some of the things. I will show you some of the things I am doing in the next post. |

I looked at the quilt by Karen Stone and she does do wonderful things etc. Here is a pic of what I did with my clam so you can get an idea what Karen does with her blocks. I traced my template on an old dryer sheet. then I just sewed some strips on it and when I got to the end of the tracing by the longer end, I sewed a wider strip and then re-traced my template, on the back in case it shrunk a bit and it did and I cut it out and spray starch with the up and down movement, and here you have an idea.
This quilt will take some time as I want to make some fancy work on that template like Karen did to hers. Remember is not as hard as it looks. If you paper piece, you can do the crown. mark your centers and pin the sides and off you go. I do want lots of greens in mine though. The block are about 10 inches across, just bit enough to play on. I will post every time I make a fancy one like the one now. You can do this, just be patient and play. I made a mistake and worked on the smaller template that has the crown. I meant to work on the large template so I would have more room to play. I then just cut a plain crown for the block. |
I cut some pie wedges out of scraps from the the main template and will use those here and there. I am going to look through block base at blocks to get more ideas....
Absolutely brilliant start on your Pickle Dish design; it's coming together nicely. I can see why you only manage 2 blocks in a day. For those really interested in the pattern, Sarah Vedeler has it named "Pickle Dish" it is a very old pattern with various names.
Rosy.. I love your work! I followed your link to your work being nosy and found the most wonderful and colorful display of quilts and dolls! Wow, you have been busy.

Ada, it is indeed a very old old pattern and it's on Barbara Brackman's website. It is call the pickled lady. The quilting ladies of the world were going crazy trying to find the pattern including myself lol. then some company came out with it and was selling it for 30.00/ Its just a clam shell with a crown, no big deal and I was able to draft it in EQ......or to begin with I drafted it on paper but EQ was more exact.

I started to work on the clams today, I fooled around and did these two. One of them I did the other day. Then I had a calm that didn't work out, so I put it on a piece of dryer sheet and sewed around, cut the dryer sheet in the middle and turned it out. I am going to put that one on a bag.
I was looking at all the scraps billing up and decided to do some crazy stuff. I was thinking little bags. I had so much fun with the scraps that I made the front and back for two and a half bags and then I got tired. I am going to try out the new, sit down, long arm from Martelli, to quilt them. I was using the Martelli fussy cut templates and windows to cut out the cats. I love how when you turn the piece to cut the other side, the fabric does not move. The templates have a special finish on the bottom that holds the fabric. Their rulers do the same. I love those. I just love doing the crazy scraps, it's so mindless and the more you do the better you get at it. |
Beautifully detailed and executed!!! I fully understand why you might only do a few in one day! The colors really are pretty too.
And then I have to take a break from them and do something different so I decided on a bag...I will do a bag post....
