I did 3 pin wheels and this one turned out the best..but still not there..and I am stumped as to why. I ironed both pieces, placed one on top of the other (right sides facing in) and cut them to exact 5 in squares, pressed again..(just setting iron on top not actually moving it around on it) I then sewed 1/4 in seam all the way around it. I then cut it from corner to corner each time. Pressed each piece again (with seams going to the darker color) Sewed the top two together with 1/4 in seam, then the bottom two, then the two sections together. I then pressed again. Can anyone tell me what I may have done wrong? The pin wheel starts the 10th..I hate to start out behind because I can not get it to work right. ha ha ha Be a day late dollar short again lol oops forgot the picture...post that next.. a duh moment lol

Sorry..but I think it looks grat! What do you see that I don't?

DogHouseMom 02-08-2011 08:47 AM

Ditto here ... I'm seeing nice points all happily having a meeting in the center. Beautiful color selection too.

karen65ae 02-08-2011 08:54 AM

Unless I need new glasses I can't see a problem.. Please don't tell me I need new glasses .lol

Mariposa 02-08-2011 08:56 AM

Looks great to me! :)

dotcomdtcm 02-08-2011 08:57 AM

I starch mine so the bias does not stretch. This looks good to me!

PaperPrincess 02-08-2011 09:03 AM

Hmm, not 100% sure, but when you cut corner to corner, open and press, how do the corners look? On your practice square, the corner in the extreme upper right looks like it would be perfect (stitching coming out a bit?), the one on the upper left looks a bit off, like the orange fabric comes down a bit rather than hitting the corner exactly. If these corners are a bit off, then when you join them the center is going to be off.

Ok I will try to attach a close up so you can see..the right side does not look like the left side.

granky 02-08-2011 10:11 AM

!!!!!!!! When mine look that good, I call it 'done'!

LoisN 02-08-2011 10:13 AM

Take your badge off. No quilt police on duty today. It looks great to me.

Nana2Sew 02-08-2011 10:33 AM

Your block look good to me.
On my sample......I used 8" sqs.....sewed 1/4" seam and cut into four triangles. When I measured each triangle....I found a slight difference. Then I trimmed them to 5 1/4" and found they fit together much better.
Can't wait to see all the pinwheels!

rootyr 02-08-2011 10:33 AM

Looks fine to me too!

stacey65 02-08-2011 10:51 AM

Nice job

Juliebelle 02-08-2011 10:53 AM

Looks good to me too

Lucymae 02-08-2011 10:56 AM

looks good to me...i'm syill trying! :-)

ckcowl 02-08-2011 11:02 AM

try cutting your two squares as you did then draw a diagonal line -- stitch 1/4" on each side of the drawn line then cut on the line and flip open press. i think the precision may be a little better but i usually trim (square up) my blocks after pressing, before joining them. (to square them up i place the 45 degree line on my ruler along the diagonal then trim 2 sides, turn block line up diagonal again and trim the other 2 sides...

candlequilter 02-08-2011 11:30 AM

The spray starching will help alot with the bias plus remember when you do go to connect this pinwheel to the next block you might have to stretch just a little or ease up a little to make corners or points to match better - but that happens on most everyones. Also try to make sure that you are butting up your seams and locking them together it sure makes the block lay smoother.

Thanks,
Sherryl

if you're thinking that the blades are not all going in the same direction, they are. otherwise, i don't know what what you see.

tolepainter54 02-08-2011 11:33 AM

Looks good to me!

snicker dee 02-08-2011 11:34 AM

Looks great to me too! Are you a perfectionist?

sharoney 02-08-2011 11:35 AM

Don't see the problem!

retired2pa 02-08-2011 11:36 AM

It looks great! Sounds like you're like me....picky...LOL. I want everything I make to be perfect and I get frustrated with myself when it isn't...which it NEVER is!!

I use the Easy Pinwheel block method from Missouri Star Quilt Co. There is a great tutorial on their web. It's so much easier than how you're doing them. Be sure to use a lot of starch on those bias edges :)

susiequilt 02-08-2011 11:48 AM

You will be making perfect pinwheels by the time you finish!
Practice makes perfect and all that. They look good to me and I'd use them in my quilt!

Something to try is to press your center seams open instead of to the side for less bulk in the middle.
See if that helps.

Lynnie25 02-08-2011 12:05 PM

mythreesuns, that's how mine look and like you for a while I agonised over getting that final point 'perfect' - then I told myself they looked fantastic and sewed up more just like that one...

Your pinwheels are perfect just the way they are :)

missgigglewings 02-08-2011 01:13 PM

your right or my right..they both look great! Are you talking about that ONE teeny, tiny little point not connecting to the other teeny, tiny little points?

Oh for pitys sake!!

Jennifer22206 02-08-2011 01:36 PM

I see nothing wrong with it at all. It's fine! No quilt police around here. :D

QM 02-08-2011 01:46 PM

I love pinwheels, and other HST blocks. Even that small discrepancy would also drive me crazy. Try this.

When you are pinning to combine your subunits, make sure the seam allowance that is on top 'faces' the machine needle. Another way to say it is that the needle comes to the seam allowance before the previous seams.

If you want to have the seam allowance the other way because you will end up with dark under light, clip that previous seam allowance close to the new seam.

Doing it this way is no harder, but it looks much more impressive when the points meet exactly.

If this is not a clear statement, let me know and I'll post pix. I figured this one out for myself then saw it on Simply Quilts, back in the day. The reason is that once the seam allowance is locked in place with a stitch, the pressure foot can't push the upper seam allowance away from the lower one.

mythreesuns 02-08-2011 02:20 PM

missgigglewings...thats the one I am talking about..when others have posted pics...theirs all look awesome.

QM sorry I do not understand what your trying to explain to me.

I am by far not a perfectionist...but I would like to be close. ha ha ha

It is just everyones quilts on here look so awesome..and I would love mine to be the same way.

fayza 02-08-2011 02:24 PM

Looks good to me :)

cathylynn 02-08-2011 04:10 PM

you're being too hard on yourself. it looks good.

Raggiemom 02-08-2011 04:19 PM

I hope mine come out that good!

sewwhat85 02-08-2011 06:17 PM

i think they look great have you pressed the north and south and east and west seams open that some times helps, still mine dont look as good as yours

My thoughts exactly!

gramquilter2 02-09-2011 06:36 AM

Your pinwheel looks good-remember the more you practice the better/easier it gets.

Suzi 02-09-2011 06:49 AM

Have you ridden by the block on your galloping horse? Kidding aside - I understand what your trying to show. Having made MANY pinwheels I really don't have an explanation for it - other than press those seams open and quit agonizing.

rannyof3 02-09-2011 07:06 AM

I've got a bunch done and am having a heck of a time with them. Figured I could do this. I had a bunch of 8 inch squared (from pot holders) and started out, plus cutting whites. They ended up 10 7/8 (some) and I have trimmed them all down to 10 1/2. Mine are a mess too. I'm so totally stumped, but moving ahead. I'm a fraud anyway. I sew, but I'm sure not a "quilter" like most of you are. I'm just to the point that I am going to keep going and probably hide it when I finish it. LOL

Elisabrat 02-09-2011 07:08 AM

are you pressing or ironing them? ironing them pulls them out of shape a bit on the outside edges. Pressing the iron down on them helps keep the shape better. I think they are fine and surely close enough to just go for it.

jolo 02-09-2011 07:29 AM

the 2 on the right side or turned differently. Have all the blades turning the same way. Dont know how to say it differently to make sense.

jolo 02-09-2011 07:31 AM

PS they are beautifully done, No one would notice it when the quilt id finished.

Shunem 02-09-2011 07:46 AM

I have to agree---methinks you're being too hard on yourself. ;)
