I've never heard of anyone marking a quilt with an
ink pen. Years ago they used pencils. There are dissappearing pens and pens that will come off with water.
I doubt the ink will come out of the fabric.
Using something strong enough to remove the ink may damage your fabric.

Take a pic of it when the ink is all gone... I have hope for you.. .and the quiti quilt

I had a carpet cleaner tell me this when I asked him what was he using in the can that was covered with duct tape.... and also from the auto store, an engine cleaning product you spray on and rinse it quicklie... Yes, that was the 2 products he had tapped with the duct tape....I was so surprised and now when I have a stain I use it and it works!!!Especially if it is a petrolium based ink!! just try a small spot first... its worth a try than having to rid the quilt....

:? :? :?

Yes! I had faith that it would work too!! I read this in a book from the 1800's that ammonia will lift all heavy chemicals from store bought detergents that if you soak your item one hour in ammonia/water prior to washing, all additives and stains will be gone and especially dish towels would be renewed!! Add a little vinegar and both together will rid the item of odors. Ratio was 1c. to the gallon. So only a tiny bit is needed for a small basin of water. Will soak in ammonia/vinegar (correct spelling vin * e*gar) and I can even add a little baking soda too for the softness feature. WD-40 to the rescue!!!

Great idea, Ditter43. In the photo of the whole quilt, where three areas show the marking and the fourth doesn't, I thought it would be a good idea to carefully mark the lines solid on all of them. It would give the same effect as your suggestion. Make lemonade out of that lemon!

Just 2 corners were marked in ink first (5 rings and fans). Making whole solid lines is an idea but only if everything else fails.

Your welcome!! I am so grateful for your suggestion! If I had tried it first before anything else could interact with it, it probably would've taken it all out!! At one point today I was worried the idea of rubbing alcohol and lighter fluid would ignite on me!! lol. :D :D

What about soaking it in Oxyclean for a while??? I know it seems to take out those old rust stains on white clothing if you soak one day, make a new solution, soak again, make a new solution and keep doing this for about 3-4 days.

quiltermomo 09-08-2010 07:06 PM

Whoops! Looks like something I might do. Sorry.:(

Thank you, leiladylei54!! That's a great idea. I have alot of faith in Oxyclean but many times it has not removed the set-in stain. So far, Acetone, has won out!!! I can see as it's drying that it looks like the remainder has been lifted!! Final results soon though.

Yikes! Nail polish remover? I'd try a sample first. I had a very bad experience with nail polish remover on fabric. Bleached a white spot...

Oh, no!! It didn't bleach anything yet. We'll know soon. Some of the detergents I've used have spotted the clothes. I think it may be the scented Tide doing it. The acetone may be safer than regular detergents.

I've always used Wisk to take out stains in my laundry. Sometimes I have used shampoo. So, sorry about the quilt. It really is pretty.

lucyb 09-08-2010 10:12 PM

I would try alcahol

zz-pd 09-08-2010 10:34 PM

I am so sorry, they do have a fine line blue ink for quilting, that comes out with water. God bless.

Annya 09-09-2010 02:09 AM

I have an idea-- Why done you sew over the ink spots in the dark color and make it look like the actual quilting. That way it will not show so badly. Sorry didn't see the follow up stories. Have you tried using buttermilk. I also heard that mayonnaise gets rid of pen properly too. Give it a try and see if that works before continuing the acetone.

jitkaau 09-09-2010 03:46 AM

Try to make a big feature of it with thick thread on bits you can turn into chunky sashiko stitches, or cover it up with fabric paint or extra embellishment. You could end up with a really funky quilt if you put ribbon, paint, ink dyes or beading on it.

I just used a "washable" marking pencil (blue) for some dolly clothes for my granddaughter's American Girl doll. Guess what? The same problem. I've tried everything. Thank gosh it wasn't one of my quilts, and I only used a little on some small dots that needed to match up. But the dress is very sheer pink and the marks show through. My new favorite motto is .. Aunt Retta 09-09-2010 07:22 AM

Try the aresoul (Sp) Spray and Wash. Sometimes it is hard to find ( I could not get it in Phoenix) But my mother is an expert stain remover and she has gotten lots of thick ink, like when a pen explodes, out of many different things with it...I have even used it on a few things!

Your welcome, KandiKane!! We're so glad you found us! This is a great site and the people are super!! Yes, I hate I had to try so many different things, but even our failproof items fail us so testing first on scraps is the lesson learned and secondly not to trust everything we counted on before -- even they can fail. Thank you!!!

It's gone through a lot in its little life of being a treasure. You have to document the story of course that you had the whole world trying to fix the ink problem. Don't forget to put the recipe for the ink be-gone with it. WD-40 and lot's of prayers. We can all calm down now. Have a good day everyone!!!

I have one too that marks blue and I don't like it. I think it failed me once if I recall. One white pencil to mark on dark fabs I haven't tried yet or the silver pencil I haven't tried. I'll go for the Pilot G207 ink pen that comes out with water. You know you are so right!! In today's market, we can TRUST NOTHING! My aerosol hair spray failed me so anything can fail us we've depended upon. Therefore, try a sample test first on scraps!! We live and we learn.....so sorry about the marks on the sheer dress but you were lucky it wasn't a quilt! Nothing is as it's claimed to be today!!

Praise the Lord!! It is finished!! Yes, I'll smile when I think of all its applications it has had!! It was at the doctor's for 2 days!!! haha. We can all take a breather now. Lessons learned:

1) don't trust anything you've counted on before! It CAN FAIL!
2) always test it out FIRST on scraps!
3) don't mix chemicals together! Let each layer dry separately!
4) don't inhale the chemicals! They are dangerous and many are cancer-causing agents!
5) if you use Acetone, cover your nose first! Do not inhale it!!
6) if you use WD-40, don't inhale those fumes!
7) After using WD-40, soak the article in ammonia/vinegar solution to rid the smell.
8) Line dry the item on the clothesline in the SUN! It's a purifier!
9) Just because the quilting mfg. says so doesn't mean it's true!
10) Use caution along with good judgment and wisdom
11) Gently dab the article with Qtips dipped in Acetone. If it does bleach the fabric any, it won't be so noticeable! (one person noted that Acetone did bleach their item).
12) Before trying a product with a great sounding name, check the ingredients first! What's in this thing that could harm my fabric?
13) Be wise on all your shopping trips and purchases!

Thank you, dsj, for all your super support and encouraging words! Praise God, we recovered and the mini is resting fine from all that surgery!! Hope everyone will be more cautious now on the products we use and things we do!!
:-D :-D.....especially me....

dsj 09-09-2010 08:36 AM

Now you have me worried about you and your health from all those fumes!! How are you feeling? are you light headed, dizzy feeling, thirsty, hungry, I'm sure you are tired from all of it. That was a lot of work for you?
You are right mixing all that can be a little dangerous I suppose. We need to have your list of things to becareful of as a permanent fixture on the board. I have a passion for what we all do. Quilts are not only a link to our history but our future as well. They can sure brighten a day.

grandme26 09-09-2010 09:05 AM

It is a beautiful quilt. Have you tried white toothpaste and a soft toothbrush? Tooth paste is more than just for teeth.

Thank you so much, grandme26! That's a good tip! Toothpaste is an excellent remedy around the house! It will remove scratches from glass top tables or scratch marks from furniture, etc. but I did not want to consider using it as the ink had smeared and I knew very well it would take a strong agent to remove it. I didn't think toothpaste would do the trick but you never know til you try! No one had suggested it! Great tip!!

;-) ;-)

OMG, no! I'm doing FANTASTIC!! This was a piece of cake and I wasn't stopping til it was ALL out! Today I want to do some samples for all of you and show you test results. Hope to get the pictures downloaded soon. On a scrap, I want you to see test results of the effectiveness of the product (without the layering of many applications like I did). We want to see if WD-40 can really pass the test on its own. More later! Thank you, dear! You are a sweetheart!!

:D :D

hagatha1958 09-09-2010 10:08 AM

I dont know if this will work but oxi clean works real good for stains I put it in cold water and let it soak for about 4 hours or overnight.

jamannix 09-09-2010 10:31 AM

Your quilt is so pretty. If you can't get it out, use matching floss and cover the
ink trying to look like it was intentional quilting.

dsamommy 09-09-2010 10:55 AM

I once marked my quilt with a template pencil....what a mess! I used a product called Zout. It worked wonders! See if you can find that and try it. I don't know if it is available in all areas or not. But, you have a nice quilt anyway.

Jim's Gem 09-09-2010 11:00 AM

Well, folks, it ain't over til it's over! Sad to say, WD-40 failed to pass my standalone test on new scraps! I found a scrap in the scrap bag that was marked already on the back with a felt tip pen so that's our sample #1. Sample 2 and 3 I drew on with ink pens. Here are the results: (So Rubbing Alcohol is the new winner!!!) Very effective!!!

same thing after 10 min.! Just treated the last two lines only!

Sample 2

Sample 3

10 min. later after treated w/Rubbing Alcohol!!

same thing after 10 min. (almost ALL gone!)

30 min. later treated w/WD-40 (didn't do a thing! notice the box is saturated with it!and the ink just smeared)

Thank you, hagatha!! I love Oxyclean!! It's the best for set-in stains that have been there a long time, but many times Oxyclean has failed me~! Even after repeated treatments! Keep notes on what works best for you and your articles!

That is great news to hear. Glad you are okay through all of that. Glad we didn't have to send the HAZMAT team in after you. You have some really sweet fabrics in that piece have you been collecting those for a while? I repair and restore quilts so fabric is always interesting to me.
