I have to admit that I don't know what a template is. What I do is tape pieces of copy paper together and then draw a big rectangle. For this one I drew a 18 inch long and 15 inch wide rectangle. Then I draw lines dividing the rectangle. I made 9 different shapes in this one. Then I laid the big paper on top a pile of 9 fat quarters ....different fabrics...., pinned it down, and cut the pieces out with a new blade in my rotary cutter. (I used to make my own clothes...same idea, lay pattern on top and then cut it out....maybe that is what a template is???) Then I sewed the pieces together in an order where none of the same fabrics touched. The pieces don't fit together perfectly, but I just trim.

Here is a similar quilt I made. same pattern, different fabric....in case that helps.

Sometimes it's hard to decide what to make for a boy, but this quilt is just perfect! Someone will cherish it and appreciate your efforts to make it.
