I think this quilt is ugly but it has such meaning for me.

My DHs cousins put this together for my dad when he got sick years ago. It is made out of polyester strips and cotton backing. Its great in that its warm and not very heavy. He had severe neuropathy and any kind of heavy blankets or clothes hurt him especially in his feet and legs.He used it at home and took it to the nursing home when mom couldnt take of him any longer.

He was so upset when it supposedly got lost in the laundry. We peeked in doors for several weeks and we finalky saw it in another patients room!!! We told the nursing staff and they quickly retrieved it and had it re-washed. The other patient has torn off dads name label and wrote their name in permanent ink on the back.

Dad was sooo happy to get his blanket back. He passed away 10 years ago and I inherited his qulilt - I sleep with it every nite. I take it with me if I go out of town so I have a little bit of home with me. It has held up well and has outlived dad and 3 of the 4 cousins who made it for him. The other atient's name can stillk be read!!! I always thought it was ugly but it has such great meaning for me that it gets prettier every day lol

So does anyone else have a such a quilt???

Yes, but it's not a quilt yet. It's a quilt top my grandmother (dad's mom) made out of her old polyester clothes. I have it and plan to quilt it as soon as current projects are finished.
I'd post a pic but since we're moving the the next few weeks it's already packing up.

I don't think it's ugly! It's beautiful especially because of the memories! Sorry the other pt. Liked it so much he claimed it but hopefully he thought he could have it. I have neuopathy from back problems so can understand What he needed in a quilt'. Glad u have it and is loved. Wish I'd made one for mine'!

oh my, that would have made me go make that other patient a quilt of his/her own. nursing homes are a difficult place to keep anything personal.shame.

I read your post before the pic was loaded. I expected something hideous. When I refreshed the page to see the quilt I was suprized! I think it's pretty!

Thanks for sharing that lovely story and the photo.

I am laughing at the other patient thinking he/she would not be noticed under that very one-of-a-kind quilt!! To be fair, maybe your Dad's name fell off in the wash and the other person thought it was an orphan.

Its lovely that you still have you this to enjoy. And I dont think it is particularly ugly- I think it is bright and cheerful and sunny!

I think it is great. I am looking at making a quilt with that same pattern- just not with polyester. But my mom made several in the 70's with polyester material. The colors were not a pretty as yours. An I love the memories it carries. I did not get much of my dad's personal stuff. I did buy a cowboy hat that was his at a family reunion auction. (they said they would have gave it to me if they knew I wanted it.) He loved the reunions so in away, it was for him anyway. Dads are great.

I don't have a camera to post a pic but my Dad made me a crazy quilt out of some of my Moms clothes. It ihas navy ships fabric border around it and a fleece backing witj a navy carrier on it. It is very special to me. My Dad was in the Navy for 28 years and my husband was in for 22 years. Yes, I was a Navy Brat! and my Mom was a wonderful Navy wife, my Dad never would have made it through all those years without her skills as a homemaker etc and parent... so yes, I have a special blankie also...

That looks like a quilt made to be used and loved.

Was that other patient "normal" or "not quite right"?

I'm glad you still have it and that it gives you comfort.

I do not think it is ugly, either!
