On Sunday, I participated in a workshop by Aniko Feher where we started with a photo, created a pattern, and from that created a quilted pet. Dash is now ready to be stitched down. The full description of the project is on my blog.

WOW, it's looking great. You should do a tutorial on how you did this, it is something I have been wanting to do.

Folks, I am honored to be asked to write a tutorial, especially as a novice quilter.

For now, I don't feel like I can do this, as I would feel like I am taking from the quilt artist who taught the workshop.

I'll do some research on various ways that quilt portraits are created to try to figure out how much of Aniko's method is hers alone.

What I can tell you is that we did not use computers or sewing machines in class yesterday (the sewing will come later). The pattern was created using an enlarged photo, transparencies, an ultrafine sharpie, pencils, fabric and fusible.

The current status of the project is a fusible applique. I'll be adding thread painting and the background over the next few weeks.

I think one of the keys to a successful quilt from a picture is the quality of the starting picture.

I do go into a little more detail on my blog. And I will say, that my basic drawing skills stink, but I am pretty darn good at tracing...

    Cheers, K

Lovely! I love the use of the white on white instead of just plain white. It will give the white more dimension.

Got to ask ... is Dash a show-dog? The photo of him standing looks like a stacked photo one would use in an advertisement. He looks stacked, groomed and in terrific condition! Nice looking Corgi.

Thank you so much for letting all of us know the circumstances. I admire your honesty. I did sneak a peek on your blog, and I think I may be able to figure it out but not until I get a really great picture of good quality.
Thanks again for sharing with us and getting all of us so excited about your beautiful project.

    Hi Sue,

Yes, he is CH Carterhall Commander N Chief RN. The stacked picture I used to get his color correct was taken professionally about a week after he finished his Championship. His breeder arranged the photoshoot since they hadn't been able to get a picture with the judge at the show.

Currently, he is a champion lapdog. I will eventually clean him off and show him again - as AKC now offers a Grand Champion title. But my son is a hockey player, so all our time and $$ is going there.

My son took the picture I used for the portrait - one of those lucky shots we all envy - Dash was draped across my lap at the time.

    Cheers, K
