That is called a camel back chest. Or at least I think it is.The reason was that you could overfill it and it still would close. Kind of like a camel fills it's hump with water. It looks very well done. I am sure your husband is proud of it. My chests are Southern White pine. One of the plantation grown sustainable woods that make for a renewable resource. I try to buy only renewable resource woods. I no longer make anything that comes from rain forrest cuts, as that is clear cutting and doing great damage to the planet. There are plenty of woods that grow right here in the U.S. that work for furniture and are from sustainable sources. Just my way of saving the planet.

I want to be one of your nieces!! I love your work. I'd love to have all of the equipment you must have in your wood shop. I wish I lived near you so I could be a student of yours.

these are wonderful! my dad and hubby were woodworkers, too--i know the love and effort that goes into a project like this. i coveted my mother's cedar chest for years! your nieces must be so proud of both quilt and the lovely "storage" chest. that is a terrific start in life, and a great memory to give them.

a childhood friend referred to her dowry chest as the "hopeless chest", and mine became my "despair barrel". our names for them didn't come to fruition, though--we have both been married to the same guys for over 40 years. kind of nice, that.
