This may sound bizarre however - I came across this problem also and being I think ifpiecing is much the same as carpentry I have resorted to using those tools . Now, I have done this, take a small tack hammer and, after pressing open the seams smack that intersecting seam with the hammer. Now don't hurt yourself laughing and ROTF, I'm serious. It really works and you will not press and distort that seam with too much heat. Give it a try-if anything - it'll make you feel better. The block is beautiful - Merry Christmas

I love that quilt block! You did such nice piecing too. I'm sorry but I don't have a solution to your
seam build up as I have had that problem with piecing.

I was taught to construct the star or the figures in halves, press like crazy and then join the two halves of the pattern so that most of the bulk was already pressed flat.

I think I saw a little viedo clip on Missourisewing web sit regarding all this seam problem, I thnk it had to do with the big star quilt. It is pretty recent so you may be able to find it. It helped me, if I find it I will post it again.

I always press the seams open (even on the HST) and it really helps on blocks with many pieces lay flat.

Would definitely press seams open. There will be a 'lump' in the center no matter what you do. How I handle that is, after carefully pressing, lay the center of the 'lump' on a kitchen cutting board on the cabinet, place a folded paper towel over the 'lump,' and give it a few good whacks with a hammer. Results are amazing.

I think pressing the seams open would help with the problem and give you less bulk where the fabrics come together.

beautiful pattern and colors, press seams open and they will lay flatter for you, cut down on the bulky spots.

Hey gal don't give up on it, its simply beautiful. Maybe you just need to walk away from it until after the holidays are over and then give it a go again.
