Try cutting the ears off after you set each piece together.

Eleanor Burns has a method of 'swirling' seams by taking out a few stiches in the seamline. This isn't the best color combination for 'on camera' but perhaps you can understand what she is doing. It's right around the 20 minute mark in the video if you want to skip over the first part. Hope this helps.

There is a way to minimize those "lumps" you have. We all have them from time to time, especially with star points coming together. I learned how to stop this from my friend, Eleanor Burns. She has brilliant tips about quilting and many of my quilting tips come from her. Like everyone else has said, try it with the seams pressed open. Lots or starch and steam works for me!
