I would match the two pieces, make a quilt out of them and call it reversible. A small child would love either side and could change off. I wouldn't cut either one up into squares. A thin batting inside would increase its hug value.

I'm working on a quilt with that ducky fabric that I bought from Avalon Blooms cut as kaleidoscopes. My intention was for it to look like ducks in a pond with the surrounding yellow fabric depicting the beach (I know - I think way too much!)
I'll back it with yellow minkee and not use any batting.
Don't look too closely -- it's my first attempt at applique. Boy, do I ever learn things the hard way!
