I love it! I did exactly the same thing with some scrap plastic my son brought home from work and scrap dowels- total cost FREE just my price range. LOL

Lowes will cut most things - including plexiglass - for you - as will Home Depot. May be safer (considering the flying bits and pieces) than trying to do it yourself!

Wow thimblebug -- you are genius! What a great, easy idea! Thank you!!

It also helps to tape plexiglass with masking tape when cutting it. I make lot of my own templates useing plexiglass, such as squares dimonds, triangles etc.[/quote]

Plexiglass templates! Amazing idea!

One way to help with the weight of the quilt when doing FM is to get a table set up to your left making an "L" off of your sewing table. If you can get it the same height of the extension for your sewing machine that helps even more. Then having a table in back of your machine to hold the quilt as it moves off of the sewing area also helps. The only way I can do this is to move slap dab in the middle of the largest room in the house. LOL Some libraries around here allow folks to use some of their meeting rooms and I'm in a quilting group that meets in one of these rooms. Have to make reservations. Of course if all of us were blessed with unlimited $$$$$$$$$$ we could have one of the tables like some of the TV quilters have where the sewing machine sets down into the table and the table is as large as a small room.
