Thank you, Tweety, for posting this.
I originally wanted to cut 4" strips to make my HST's but, alas, I was only left with 3.5" strips of fabric and was thinking I'd have to dig into my stash for other neutrals to use. Then I saw your post and all was well with the world again.

I made a sample block to make sure it works, and it was perfect. I sewed a scant 1/4" just so I would have a bit more to trim to square up. I'm glad you posted pics since I would have never thought about moving the ruler up 1/4" when cutting. I don't have that Omnigrip triangle ruler, so I just used my square Creative Grids ruler and used the diagonal line at the edge of the fabric.

I'm a new quilter and this was a life saver for me.

Picture below is the HST finger pressed that is 3 1/2". It was so easy to chain piece.

I love all of the pretty colors and 3 1/2" squares from all of the clues. You are all doing great. I've started on all clues, but not one of them is completed yet. Step 1 = is almost done. Only 25 more 4 patches to go. Step 2 = I have, 2 completed and all cut out. 30 1/2 way sewn. Step 3 = 1/2 way done and step 4 = all cut out and 20 1/2 sewn. Step 5 will cut some tomorrow. I plan to use the make 8 at 1 time process. I'm sure enjoying this slow process. I'm making the large top. Working and cleaning house is so getting in the way of my sewing. It slow my progrsss so much. LOL

Merry Christmas to everyone. I hope it is all you wished for and more.

I, too, am enjoying the slow pace.
This is my very first mystery, and I really wanted to keep up with everyone.
We had our Christmas gathering yesterday, so I get to relax all day today and, hopefully, finish Clue 5.
Woohoo!

I prefer the slower pace as well, I wouldn't mind if we were only half way done lol

Well I worked on clue 5 and also laid out a pattern. I'm sure this is not it,but it was fun to do.

Thank you for that method...

[QUOTE=Belfrybat;7725837]Another way to make them if you are going scrappy is to cut a neutral and purple square 3

I am still woefully behind, but beginning to catch up.
Now that most of the mayhem of Christmas is over with, I might be ok by Friday, since (yay, me!) I'm off from work until next week!

I finally got all my #2's done; my Tri-Recs skills with my ruler are just pitiful, and as I mentioned earlier, I dug thru my Accuquilt dies, and did indeed have the necessary die for this part (as well as part 4). So now that I have the hang of this, I'm just jumping to part 4 while my brain is in that triangle mode. Hopefully part 3 will go as quickly as part 1 did. And after seeing clue #5, I dug into my dies again (with my fingers crossed!!) and (yay me, again!) sure enough, I have the die to make the 3" HST's!!

We have no real plans for this week - next weekend will be a belated Christmas with other family members several hours away, so I'm hoping that Friday's clue won't be too onerous either. With any luck, I should be all caught up by Friday.

Has anyone else had a problem with their tri-recs blocks being a bit on the small side? I thought I had my scant quarter inch seam scant enough when I started but something must have changed. I keep moving that need needle over. Normally I sew at 3.8 for my scant and with these I am doing 4.4.
I was watching a quilt in a day show the other day and she was using her triangle in a square rulers. That got me to thinking that I just might have bought a pattern with those rulers a few years ago in Houston when I saw her. Sure enough I have them! Too bad I have already cut out all my triangles that I need for both of those clues. Eleanor Burns cuts hers out oversized and them trims them down (which is a pain) but at least they wouldn't be too small.

I make my own paper template, cut a strip the width I need then use school stick glue (the tiniest dab) to secure the paper to my regular ruler and cut away. I made the pattern so I made it to use a full 1/4 inch seam.
